Cost for transcription?

Does anyone have an idea of the going rate for transcription of video interviews? I have several hours that need transcribing and I just can not make myself do it.

If it's english, I'd look into a six pack for a buddy.... traditional transcription usually costs mucho.

Rates will vary, but in my limited experience in LA it's around $100 per hour of video for a one person interview.

we've paid from 25 - 100 hr ... we found the 25hr person to be the most accurate & fastest - paying a higher rate doesn't equal speed ... lower rates 25-35 were out of state .. 50-100hr were SF/LA areas .....

WLS Translations, does transcriptions, translations in many languages,

for a standard transcription it cost me 900 US$ for 5 hours worth of bla bla bla-ing.

not sure on the website, google it, or better yet.....YAHOO it!

If you can get a price-per-line rate rather than an hourly rate, you can eliminate the problem of having to pay extra for someone's slow typing. That's why my wife charges by the line, rather than by the hour.

Thanks, everyone - this is all very helpful. We currently have about 15 hours of bla-bla-blaing in English with various pronounced accents - mostly Danish and French.

The great thing, actually, about transcribing interviews with people for whom English is a second (or third, or fifth) language, but are fluent in it, is that they are much more direct and concise in what they're saying - not a lot of "you know" and "um..." and "like". Maybe we've just been lucky.

We've already transcribed a fair amount of it, but we'll be amassing yet more in December, so we're looking towards the future of getting this stuff transcribed.

You can email the video you need transcribed? If that's the case, what kind of turnaround are you looking for?

Sorry, atlcHEROKEE - I didn't see your response until now. I think I could email small, low-res quick time files. If not, then the same sent snail mail on a CD.

Right now we're just trying to get an idea of what this might cost and the best way to go about it.

Thanks,

Robert

No problem Bus....Im not a professional transcriber, I just know that I do this at work all the time (I work in TV News) and could probably turn of the stuff around for you if need be. I could work out a reasonable rate. I could do them for about 13 cents a line probably, depending on how many hours you had and how fast you needed them turned around?

Very good to know. We'll keep you in mind when we get to that point. I don't recall - did you include your email address in the PM?

Bus, I looked up your website and it looks like a great topic for a film.

Were you filming in Christiania before the place became popular with Denmark's riot police?

Hey, Russell -

Thanks. Yeah, that description on the Audience Without a Box site sounds pretty good, doesn't it? The funny thing is, when we got there to shoot in September, we started talking to people about that aspect of the story and we found out that people didn't really feel like it was a story that was important to them. We clearly need to update that site. But the historical context and the threat of government "normalization" are still pertinent, so I guess it does give a decent overview of what we're trying to capture.

Christiania has been popular with the riot police for quite some time, but it has definitely escalated in the last couple of years. When we were there for the first time in 2005 it was just the daily walk-through by the police, harassing people smoking hash. When we were there last September to start shooting on the documentary, the daily police presence was definitely stepped up, and harassment of hash buyers (but, interestingly, not sellers) had gotten a lot more intense.

One of the problems with shooting a documentary when you're not able to be in the location for extended periods of time is that the sh#t will always hit the fan the week after you leave. A week after we left in 2005 there were riots surrounding the police eviction of "Circus Christiania", a group of young squatters squatting the squat. Shortly after we left last September there were riots around the eviction of the youth squat, "Ungdomshusset", which was located in another part of Copenhagen, but carried over into Christiania because of the obvious ties between the two. Recently there were riots around the demolition of a burned out house in Christiania, which many see as signaling the beginning of the Danish government's agenda of "normalizing" Christiania and opening it up to developers, outside commerce and "normal" inhabitants from the outside.

Were we there for that? Nope. Luckily we do have good connections with a few other filmmakers who are constantly capturing the altercations, large and small, between supporters and residents of Christiania and the large and small arms of the law, and they have been extremely generous with providing us with footage.

And, also, our documentary is not exclusively tied to the violent struggles that are taking place. It's about many different aspects of life in Christiania, and may well be as much about the internal struggle that people in the community are going through as the fate of Christiania evolves every day, as it will be about the more blatant struggles with the government and with the police.

Christiania is a very complicated place for just 80 acres and 6-7 hundred people, so there is an endless supply of stories to tell. Our hope is that we will eventually get the funding together to stay in (or near) Christiania for an extended period of 6-12 months so that we can really begin to get inside the story and capture that complexity.

We're going back in December to shoot for three weeks and it will be interesting and probably a bit disheartening, to see how things have changed.

Thanks again and check in on the site from time to time - I promise we will update it one of these days.
