"On The Lot" tonight

If the show does get cancelled I think a channel like Bravo can pick this up and do it better, i.e. minus the audience and live votes and make it more like Top Chef.

Live voting was a terrible idea for this sort of talent search. It works for singers, but not for something as complex as filmmakers. I mean, with singers you're also voting for the personality: the individual performer is as much made by their "presence" and persona as by their talent. But a filmmaker is largely an invisible presence--only his/her art speaks for him, and audiences buy it or leave it. To this day, I really don't know what Spielberg is like as a "personality." I don't know that I've ever heard him say more than a couple lines on TV, and they were mainly speeches at formal Hollywood events.

Yup, I loved The Island. It's one of those movies that critics hated but which might actually be loved ten and twenty years from now.

I dont think michael bay is a hack at all. My opinion of him is changing by the minute. Just watched The island again. im starting to think hes a savant. How else can you make such a beautiful movie, out of nothing....... its kinda brilliant if you think about it.....

i love the island for its glossy look im just mad he wouldnt let scarlett J get nude and she said she would but he was like nah. Im here for pg 13.... due there is always the uncut dvd lol you know how many he would have sold lol.

I don't know where it states on this forum, "no talking bad about michael bay". The guy illicits very strong reactions because of his lack of talent and subsequent success. The argument of, "well yeah, he's doing a lot better than you are" isn't a valid one. I don't need to be a chef to know when the food sucks. Are you going to tell me that Uwe Boll is a good director because he's directed 10 Hollywood movies?

And Spidey's Michael Bay quote says EVERYTHING about him. "I make movies to buy Ferraris". Oh yeah, that's the guy I want entertaining me. You want to know who blows sh*t up real good AND pays attention to story? James Cameron. If you want to look up to someone, look up to him. People looking up to Michael Bay is one of the main reasons movies these days suck so bad. We're looking up to people who make soul-less explosion-fests so that they can buy Ferraris.

lol pretty much says it.

As a fairly rabid Michael Bay hater, I have to admit The Island was alright. It actually had something resembling a script for once, and the same writers are on The Transformers so there's a glimmer of hope.

Michael Bay, just like every other hack who ever made it in the big leagues, was in the right place at the right time. He was an accredited commercial director at a time when it was fashionable to allow commercial directors to try and direct feature films. He made Bad Boys which was allllllllllllllllllllllllllll Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. It was a hit. He gets credit and is allowed a pass into the big show. His movies are the epitome of what sells in this business (i.e. anything that appeals to 14 year old boys). Now if that's your idea of a "good" filmmaker, then that's fine. But don't try and tell me that Michael Bay has the right to judge any sort of serious work. The guy literally doesn't talk to his lead actors. Ever. That's on record. A director that doesn't direct.

The fact that Michael Bay is considered a top notch director that people try and attach to their project is exactly what's wrong with the movie industry today. Go back and read Bruce Willis' comments about Michael Bay from a couple weeks ago to find out what real industry people think of him.

Would you happen to have a link to the Bruce Willis article? I would like to read that.

Well there is nothing wrong with being a critic, but you make it seem like he stole your girlfriend or something. Clearly, he was there to promote transformers, and his poor atitude durning the show made for entertaining comments, none of which had do do with storytelling (work on your camera work, tighten the editing).

Its pretty apparant that in the world of movies and music, the truly artisitc work remains unseeen while the less-talented artists who make what the masses want to see drive fancy italian sports cars. Don't hate on him because of that fact, hate the millions of people that go out and buy tickets to his films and keep him rich. Also, how much influence Jerry Bruckheimer has on his films must be taken into consideration, cause most of Bruckheimer's films look all about the same, whether Bay is directing them or not.

Pop culture and diverse artisic perspective rarely work hand in hand, its just a fact of life. If OTL really wanted judges with real credibility, why doesn't Spielberg show his face on there, since he helped create this sinking ship.

Maybe Spielberg's smarter than we give him credit for for making himself scarce. I mean, if you were responsible for this mess would you show your face?

I know. He's just a director. And he just makes movies. And there are much bigger problems in the world. But outside of a few things, movies are what I'm most passionate about (as I'd imagine most of the people on this board are) And when I hear the name Michael Bay and "good" in the same sentence, I get kinda heated (as you've noticed). What bothers me about the guy is that he's an average filmmaker at his very best, but one look at that smarmy little smirk of his that you wish you could b*tch-slap off his face, and you can tell he *thinks* he's god's gift to film. That irritates me more than anything. That he actually believes he's a cinematic genius.

Michael Bay has only once tried to deal with real human emotions. The movie where he wanted to prove that he could do more than just blow things up. That movie was Pearl Harbor. Now that movie looked amazing. I'll give him that. But it was absolutely and unequivicolly one of the most boring movies I've ever seen (and one of the worst-acted). He simply doesn't understand people or how the real world operates.

The reason he made Transformers was why? Because it was, "about a boy and his car". Before someone pitched him that side of it, he wanted nothing to do with the movie. But it all makes sense now. The guy wants to f*ck his Ferraris. Now he can make a movie about it.

You know who I blame for this? Ang Lee. Yes, Ang Lee. Because a few summers ago some producer actually decided to do a good thing and hire a real director to direct a big summer movie. But what did Ang Lee do? He went and made the weirdest dumbest summer movie in recent memory. So now when you're a studio and you have some big summer film to make, you look down the list of directors and you say, "screw all those artistic guys. They're going to weird my movie up" and that leaves you with like 6 competant directors who you know can handle a big set and will give you a good trailer. Hence Michael Bay gets work.

Did I mention that I hate Michael Bay?

I don't blame you for having gripes against the guy, I certainly don't think that he's gods gift to filmmaking. His best attribute is that his movies are very well techically shot. He knows how to visually shoot a scene. The problem I have with him is that everything is always toooo polished looking, and every scene is waaaay too dramtic...if you look in the dictionary under excess....it will say "see also Michael Bay."

Although he still blew stuff up. Yeah, they were explosions that really happened, but explosions nonetheless. The whole film should have been about Cuba Gooding jr's character and not that nauseatingly over-the-top love story. I really think that Michael Bay thought "Hey, Jim Cameron made action movies, and then he made a period piece based on a real historical event with an over-the-top love story as the central focus of the story, and he won an oscar for it! I bet if I do the same thing, I'll win an oscar too! But what historical event could I use that has a lot of explosions...?"

the difference is that the love story in titanic was not as forced as it was in pearl harbor, and leo dicaprio is a much better actor then ben "Suplimental Insurance" Afleck.
