Super vs. Hyper?

Is super cardioid the same as the hyper-cardioid?
I learned that hyper cardioid is good for interiors.
Some one here recomended MKH50 and I checked and it says super cardioid.
I just want to make sure I am getting the right info.

Also I am thinking about either 416 or MKH-60 for exteriors.Does that sound okay to you audio masters.
Thank you
Good day.

SUPER=Shotgun very directional mic....lobar pattern with good rejection
Hyper=less directional but still better rejection than the cardiods...optimzed for human voice. Generally the super are outdoor mics and the hypers indoor...but whose looking, though the super has less chance indoors!

Thank you for the info bwest. That was really helpful.
I am working on a feature and I need a mic for indoors.
What would your suggestion be for that?
Thanks.

The MKH416's the best all-around dialogue mic I've ever used. Very directional, so you have to keep the dialogue right on-axis, especially if you're using it for interiors (many recordists prefer the MKH50 for interiors).

The MKH60 was intended to replace the venerable `416, and I suppose its technically a better microphone. However, the differences between the two mics become largely academic during real-world use, and many mixers prefer the familiarity of the `416. There are also many used `416's on the market, many of which are T-powered.

For exteriors, I'll often use an MKH816. Its very similar to the `416, except the `816 has a longer interference tube, giving it even greater side rejection. If I'm recording wide exteriors or noisey locations, I'll often reach for the `816 first. Very coloured off-axis response, though. Heavy, too. Not terribly useful indoors, unless you happen to be recording whispers (at which it excells).

I bought both my `416t and my `816t used, and they've both paid for themselves many times over. The only problem I've had has been a loose ferro-magnetic collar on the `416, which was easily fixed with a dap of Krazy Glu.

Thank you guys for the information.
All I have for you guys is respect. That's why I am here everyday.

Bytheway what I want is a clean audio without hissing, buzzing, humming, that vacuum audio and irritating stuff like that ,that kills the images.

bwest......" my bad " I was multitasking I missed to look at it.

Good day.

just to mention, the mkh50 is NOT a shotgun/lobar mic, and is PERFECTLY suited to indoor use..

the lobar pattern and super cardioid patterns are not interchangeable, but are combined on some microphones to give different results. the lobar/interference tube design is what gives shotgun mics such good off axis rejection, and is ALSO what increases their off axis colouration and rear lobing characteristics.

the fact that super cardioid mics DONT have these side effects, but are still very directional (and of course shorter, but thats just a bonus) makes them incredibly useful for indoor and even outdoor applications (another example of a super cardioid mic is the legendary Schoeps MK41 capsule, usually these days on a CMC6 preamp. Yes people, its NOT a hyper.).

Some hollywood mixers ONLY use super cardioid microphones, with the lobar/interference tube mic's (like the schoeps CMIT and Sanken CS-3e) as backup for when they are really and truly needed.

So in short, you can do MUCH better than a 416 for interior dialogue, and NO the MKH50 is NOT lobar/interference tube. It is a super, and that is what rocks about it.

the 50 is one of the most narrow super cardioid's which make it not bad at all for outside usage

thats another whole kettle of fish. you still reckon the akg uls is the best quailty for money in top end oleg?

why - you also can get it , even cheaper then me about 550 + shipping
since i have a good colelction i pick one on blind in the evening before :-)
mic the akgor mbho or even the chiniz that i dont have anymore till next month they will be here again do the work .
to pay 2000us ( incl cut 1- since this is really big benefit) its to much
for the same sum i can supply you with mbho stereo set with 2 caps each

but on the top end oleg, is there anything close enough to schoeps to be worthy of being in the same quality bracket?

i'm looking for a big upgrade on my indoor mic, and i only want to buy top stuff - no compromise. am i right in thinking its either uls or schoeps?

I just want to back up Oleg with MBHO here, for my ears the sound is phenomenal!
But I´m just the video guy...

upgrad you wierless - its more important then schoeps logo .
as i sid the akg or mbho ( extra short so you dont need the swivel in 90%)of the time will do the same work .
your skills dealing with acousic and situation are 90 % of your sound the other 10 is the quality of your mic so if schoeps is better for your ears it worth 2% overall , does it worth the extar grand or more - dont think so .

no , is just a good mic for dialog
iam checking with mbho if they can make me 603 bodies with 6 db higher out and low cut on 70 hz if they can make it - you will see some schoepses going for sale in very close time . but as i known for one that like money dont expect for fenominal price :-)

mbho have better capsule range
shorter preamps
the akg have low fq attunuation direct on its preamp
sonicaly they sound quit the same

not too stressed about on the preamp LF filter, can live without that i guess. in terms of output strength and self noise? i'd like something thats really quiet so i can pump the gain for soft talkers...

thanks oleg
