"On The Lot" tonight

I thought it was odd that they had all of these resources and now they have
nothing, no budget. What a complete waste of television time to do that.

yeah it was a week. I had to make a short in a week before i could make the next round. only thing is their guidlines. like they give you topics you have to stay too like. "hidden treasure" "first time" "a loss disguised as a win" so yeah...

spidey - how the hell did you not make it onto this show? from what i've seen thus far, the bar isn't set too high.

It looks like they are trying to save as much money as possible as this show is pretty much a failure.

Was wondering that about a lot of the DVXuser's who entered.

Seeing as how Michael Bay and the other cynical film makers picked the girls doc as the best of the night, I would have to say you are silly by saying it "sucked butt." Maybe you dont like it but you have no appreciation for the genre. It was visually the most intriguing and IMHO the best thing on the show last night.

It may have been the most visually intriguing, but it was very boring. Don't be surprised if it gets the least amount of votes while "Dough: The Musical" gets the most.

The judges seem to like everything when the director is in front of them. At the end when they wanted them to tell which they liked best one picked the "doc", another picked ?(can't remember, I think it was Teri (blind date) but it was NOT the doc), and Gary Marshell liked the Musical, Dough. I like a "good" doc, but this was NOT good, period. I was not being silly, I was being polite. What I really wanted to say about the "doc" was that it sucked ASS.

Man, enough of this comedy schtick already.

Is it a rule that people can only do comedy?

I like comedy just as much as the next guy, but I'd have to say it's pretty damn far down on the genre food chain.

I'm coming out of the closet: I watch American Idol. I'm man enough to admit that (but I don't vote though. I'll never admit to voting). I never miss an episode. BUT, when country week pops it's evil, sh!t eating, grinning face up from behind the poh-dung, cowboy hat wearing, toothless, hygene deficient, in-bred, remedial rock it's hiding behind, I just as well choose to watch something else that week.

Same with comedy. Not because I hate the genre, but I believe it is the hardest genre to get right. Only a handful of PROFESSIONALS in the history of cinema have gotten right. I sincerely doubt any of these guys will.

Unfortunately I don't have DVR. I record my programs old school style: via VCR with my thumb firmly pressed against the fast forwrd button.

The best was the gay indian, and I wouldn't even call it great. Merely good. I skipped the musical all together. If someone starts singing in the middle of film, I'm tuning the hell out.

Oh, and I predict that the curly haired lady is going out next. And if not her, the Indian lady will (as I think her topic will prove most unpopular amidst main stream audiences).

Hmm. If a woman does go out, that means out of 4 filmmakers in two weeks, the three eliminated would be women.

Why?

Well, in the words of the GodFather of soul:

yea, the rule is only comedy involving a toilet stool, urine, farting or puking and they are following the rules just great.

I got a call back they only want family friendly entertainment in the end, other than the one I submitted. plus i had 4 days to get it done and sent in the mail finding actors writin, dressing, locations, edting sound then submitted with the truck load of paper work i kid you not.... it was crazy.

I think comedy is the easiest genre to get started in, and the "safest." But it is one of the hardest to master.

You can write a bad script, say "f*ck it" and get your buddies to come out and do some badly-delivered jokes and get a few chuckles out of your audience, and that's pretty safe. Most people can pull off at least a couple of laughs. It doesn't require the subtlety of drama or the technical expertise of action.

But to do it well, you have to be good. It's like those old chinese checkers games. "Easy to learn, Impossible to master!" That's all there is to it, really. Anybody can write the script, film it and then tell people it's a silly comedy so that they don't have to face serious criticism.

I'll tell you honestly, though, comedy is my favourite genre to work in and almost all of my feature scripts have been comedy or have strong comedic elements, but for me, drama is WAY easier to write. Comedy is very meta, requiring you to be aware of jokes you've set up previously, running gags, times to release gags and tension, while, when I write drama, I tend to just let myself get swept away in the emotional intensity of the scene.

I participate in short film festivals sort of like what they're doing in OTL, and almost every film we screen are comedies. It's just an easier genre to get started in with these kinds of setups.

i love comedy, it's probably the only genre i can do.

Again, the other contestants and Michael Bay picked it as the best. So you saying not good "period" is silly. I am primarily a doc film maker and I appreciated it and thought, especially given the time frame, it was very well done. There are docs that have won Oscars that some people find boring.

ash =o)

i watched and it was ..boooooooooooooring... they arent showing anythin intersting..and whats wht MIchael Bay being there???? oh i'll tell you, TRANSFORMERS is coming out so this is him promoting the film, its not rocket science. Michael bay doesnt need to do a show like that but he knows that nerds like us watch the show so might as well plug transformers every ****ing commercial... its all aobut the MONEY. HE needs to crush the july weeknd even more..yawn.

MICHAEL BAY DOESNT CARE ABOUT FILMMAKERS

(lol i had to say that)

anyway, yah the show is really poor, next

Michael Bay is the best guest judge in the competition. I like his candor. I have to say this but my respect for him went up a notch after the show. Sure he was plugging his movie, but his reaction to some of the entries were priceless.

The show in general is in dire need of resuscitation, but as filmmakers I'm surprised by some your reactions... it's like you guys are taking pleasure in seeing the show failing. I would have thought you'd be more supportive of the show and its participants.

Well, it's hard to be supportive of this show. I honestly feel like I have a headache after viewing an episode. I have mentioned something is "not right" with the audio levels. Too much clapping, drowns out what the hostess is saying. Combine that with the constant fast-forwarding I have to do through all the fluff, and my head is spinning.

I have nothing against the filmmakers, I wish them the best of luck. It's the (constantly changing) structure of the show that irks me.

All I want to see is:
1. The films
2. The behind the scenes of the films
3. Plenty of s**t-talking & fights between contestants (They did it for one hot minute in the first episodes, they better get back to that format)

I take no pleasure in the show failing....we've got a whole summer of re-runs and crap programming ahead of us. I was hoping this show would fill the void! Oh well, at least there's Entourage.

I'm also lost as to how they're throwing around the episodes. Perhaps it's just in Canada, but first they skipped an episode and suddenly it was just down to the 18. It followed what we expected, a premiere show, and then the next night, the result show. But now this week the premiere show is on tuesday, and the result show is... when? Next week?

Not to mention the concept is just wierd. They kept changing the concept of the show. I was sceptical about the show because it seemed very apprentice style, but then it completely changed around when it went on air.

It feels like it's falling apart, put together by an amateur. I still watch it because I want to see the contestants and their films, yet we never know what the next weeks films will be about, nor do we see how they make the films, the stresses of making a film in a week, or any of that.

They never show it for american idol because there's not huge process to learning to sing a song. You practice with a coach and you memorize. But for a film there's from pre to post and lots of drama along the way.

I mean the "dough" film I loved, and thought it was amazing for something done in just a week, but for all I know someone else could have written the lyrics and done everything for the film maker. I have no clue what he really did on it or how he did everything so quickly.

I think the show should have taken on a format of "america's next top model" with voting, but if that's the case then people may not vote for the individual that causes all the drama and hate, and therefore it would be bias.

But they need to do something, because aside from the films (some films) it's not interesting at all. Untill the films are shown you want to rip out your hair because of the boring and confusing format, the long pauses (and many commercials), the judges giving out useless and fluffy criticism, no behind the scenes, and a host that's pretty on the eyes, but not the ears and noggin...

The show suffered a huge rating loss for the first two audition episodes so the producers decided to cut the third and skip straight to the big premiere. You can see the third episode on the official site but it pretty much sucked, very little drama and editing was lazy and shoddy.

Then we have the two hours premiere...and the ratings tanked some more. Now FOX has opted instead to have the show only once a week instead of twice. They'll announce the result next Tuesday and then the next films will be shown.
