BluLine fresnels???

I saw that "shock absorbing" description. What does that mean exactly? Does the center column bounce within the three legs?

Yeah, someone who has these please try to fit Arri or other metal scrims and report back?

I think the light stands have some sort of air-dampening within the column. Accomplished with bushings or something. It limits the speed at which you can lower the fixture - a little safety upgrade.

Not a huge issue on 1k and smaller, but the feature would be useful on those in-between junior and senior stand fixtures that are outright dangerous to bring in. I guess Crank-O-Vators are the answer for 5ks and heavier.

I would love to add these to my stuff. They look like they basically took Arri bodies and put their wiring stuff in.

IMO i would skip the k-stands. Those light stands are cheap and not sturdy. Just use c-stands.

I wonder if its cheaper getting the kits than just ordering the single lights w/BDs.
I havent noticed any 150s. Those are my favs. Do they make them in that body size?

C-Stands have too narrow a base for work up higher than the lowest position. Baby stands with Rocky Mtn. leg are pretty standard for safety reasons.

im confused?
what kind of baby stands are you referring to? and a c-stand is good for 10+ft in the air with a gobo hanging a 1k arrilite off the end. with sandbags countering weight of course...
If I ever need more height i usually go with a combo or mombo stand. Drumclamps work great for horizontally attaching a c-stand onto a combo as a 10+ foot gobo arm too if more length is needed.

I just try to refrain from my light stands unless im doing photography because their construction is more flimsy

Well, I don't mount 1ks on MCs very much, but I'd recommend something more like this if you're going to gag out a fixture on a 40" arm ten feet over your talent.

Sandbags or not, you've got the cantilever over too narrow a base using a c-stand. An open scrim is one thing - a wood cuke or 4x floppy is acceptable close and in toward the risers with adequate bags. If you're in a controlled studio, c-stands might be an okay working method for you.

What I'm saying is that on a professionally lit and gripped show, especially on location, you'll never ever see a 16lb. fixture (BluLine 1k with doors and 25' cable) ten feet up in the air on a c-stand. No, not ever.

If you do, send me a picture of it and the name of the key?

im not trying to argue here, my original point was simply stating that using c-stands in place of the k-stands that come in the blu-line kits can save money and add stability. When you mentioned the rocky mount, I was confused because they are basically the same base but I see where you were going with it.

but we both know the situations im referring to here when using the c-stands at height though. Were not talking about talent, that is a different story.

150's are available here in China. Very nice. I've been to the place that makes all these. They do really good work. They even have a 5K model. I'm seriously thinking about offering these to my customers on a special order basis. I wasn't planning on offering it before but when I visited the factory to see if the body made sense for my metal halide fresnel I'm going to be offering I saw all their tungsten models on a bench and they all just sort of screamed "take us back to the USA with you" ;-). Had a 150, 300, 650, 1000, 2000 and actually 2 models of 5K: one small and one large. I may offer them with other options too like completely painted black or a "green" stripe instead of the blue one.

Well if you decide to do so, put me down for two 150w, a 300, 650, 1k and a 5k with the large head design. Im sick of running low on softbanks come time for shooting.

Is there a link to this stuff other than the imagewest site? btw really lookin forward to that CMH fresnel your workin on.

unless the stands that come with these are different from those offered with the Alzos I thing they only have a spring that does very little... you feel it only when the sections are collapsing close to 100%... are those different stands?

I bought a few C-stands and 35lbs bags and I do crazy stuff with them... now hanging lights over talent... only did that with friends with setups that felt incredibly stable with 35-pounders... with small lights you'd be amazed at how high you can fly stuff on C's... something like a 650W should be completely stable (no wind) with the stand completely extended so long as it is only vertical and on even ground... I flew a 2-bank Flo-Light at a 90-degree with about half the 40 inch arm arm sticking out, with one extension all the way up, with a 35lbs bag on leg facing opposite direction and a small 10lbs weight on the other end of the arm...

scary? VERY... but I pushed the stand and it didn't want to go anywhere... it was solid... (all friends involved that day, all of us aware of it)

of course like OverLand points out C-stands are only for flags scrims and the sort... three legs is the norm and they only get bigger...

though for "personal stash" I'd recommend starting off with a few C-stands and then purchasing the big expensive suckers... what I love about all pro-stands is that they hold their value like gold (probably better, lol)...

now those stands... are they the same as the Alzo stands cause if so I personally think they are crap... but they very well might be completely different ones...

I have no idea what stands they are but when you release the wing nut the shock absorber takes over lowering the light like a hydrolic. I will take a look tomorrow at what stands they are.

oh... no... those are not the same... and it sounds like those are the same ones Overland was talking about with some sort of air valve system... I can't remember now... Overland, did you get/use Blue Lines already?

it seems those stands might be rugged enough and kinda neat then uh?

They are light too. C-stands weigh a ton and at the moment I can't really lift anything heavy without making my hips grind a little. A sand bag on them make them feel pretty sturdy. I have a 2 k pretty high up today on one bouncing off a movie screen for fill.

No link as of yet. I'm working on all that and should be up before too long to showcase our "Late Summer Collection" ;-) The little 150w fresnel turned out to be a bigger project than I thought it would thanks to the HID version of a G12 socket being a bit too big for the 650w model but they may be able to modify it a bit for me. If not, we'll use the 1000w model which isn't too much bigger.

I'm traveling right now and I don't have a CF reader on my laptop but when I get back tomorrow night I'll post a picture of the fresnels that I took a couple of days ago.

Haven't bought BluLines. I won't get a PO for anything that can't be purchased through an authorized dealer with a parts inventory, that's why I asked about the spares in the USA.

I'm sure we'll be going with Altman ProLine or Arri when we do our purchase in July.

now that im not too sure about lol.

Coollights are you referring to your 150w CMH light? I was referring to the arri knockoff tungsten fresnels, but I am interested in the HMI stuff too. Cant wait :)

Yes, I'm chosing one of these smaller blueline bodies to put the CMH 150w in, but I am also probably going to carry the tungsten models on a special order basis though and will offer a better price too than the current one being offered by Image West.
