How to achieve good clear slowmotion

Hi,

I know this has been asked over and over in different ways but i did a search for "slow motion" and came up with only 5 threads.

Anyway how can we achive good clear slowmotion. I remember reading a trick somewhere to set the project properties frame rate to higher than the orginal 25fps. My footage is 1440x1080i HDV @ 50i. How can i get nice smooth slow motion without blurring or jitteryness ?

Tried setting the fps of the project to 50fps, then applying video supersample (to create tween frames) and then finally a velocity envelope to the actual clip. But i dont see much a of a difference. The resulting renders look the same as without all this and just plain velocity envelope.

How can we get nice clean slowmo ? Thanks.

Math is math. When you can line up time sample to time sample, which you would be by lining up every 50i field with a 25p frame, you get the least amount of resampling and hence the smoothest motion.

David, Sorry i cant understand what your meaning. Your saying its better or worse than the simple technique you first suggested ?

Thanks a lot David Ill go the 50i route. But youve mentioned somewhere earlier that its better to shoot 60i (i guess more orginal frames to play with). Would it be wise to shoot the scenes i want to slow-mo in 60i ?

To angle the question a bit. I'm planing on shooting a musicvideo and using the speed up song - slow down video-trick. so it looks like the singer sings in a bit slowmotion but still he syncs the songs. anyway, don't know the technique or even the right amount of speed doing this. Just know that i gotta do it :). Is it not right to film the footage in 25p (pal) then? i still want the "film-look" that the dvx provides. but maybee that trick is getting lost slowing down the footage in post?
If anyone know the exakt setting to do this trick i'll be glad.
Anyway, when i tested another slowmo-clip in vegas today i used "don't resample" on the slow clips, it resulted in the clearest picture. material was shot in 25p.

Yes ive found that 'disable resample' works better in giving a clearer output. But then sometimes its a useful tool. But im surprised by default vegas uses smart resample on all clips. Puzzled. Anyways if you want smooth slowmo then you can shoot and maintain the 24 or 25 p. I personally think the frames will look a bit smudgy uring the slowmo. So its better like david says to build slowmo out of interlaced frames. Shoot your slowmo scenes alone in 50i. Shoot the rest of your video in the 25p mode. But ofcourse dont use the same tape for both. Thats known to cause some issues. Your better off using individual tapes for each format of recording.

Didn't know about the thing with different tapes, usefull info.
Yeah i kinda also thought that way about shooting in 50i slow and 25p regular footage. then i thought again. I guess the most of the video is gonna be in kinda small slowmo. have to dig deeper into this. Is it the same better crispnes when shooting 50i/60i and disable resample as with the 25p? have no opurtunity to test for myself in a while, stuck with work :\. What exactly is resample anyway?

Resample sorta reassembes the pixel structure. Or Builds tween frames. Sometimes you can use it to smoothen some video judder. Or trippy looking movement on screen. Ive seen this along with a lil bit of motion blur help smooth out such scenes. You have an option to resample by right clicking and another option to resample by adding the video supersample filter onto your video bus track. But the latter may increase render times a lot. The best way is to add the filter and then use the curves to make it active only where neccesary in your timeline. This way only that portion of the video will be resampled.

oh, ok. is this supersample filter a standard filter in vegas? can't remember seing it. thanks for the explanation. think i got a better hold of what resample is now
