The Lives of Others

Sad Max

Artful Dodger
Just saw it last weekend.

Wow. This is really great stuff. Casting, performances, story, everything.

Anyone else seen it?

I loved this movie afterwards. It was really slow and I thought at times, what is the point. But the ending has stayed with me. I still think of it and I saw it sefveral months ago.

Got to attend a screening several months back.

I agree it gets off to a slowish start, but what a great movie by the end.

POSSIBLE SPOILER!!!!!!!

After seeing so many depressing films lately (not a positive or negative, merely a observation) it was nice to see a movie that had an uplifting ending (kinda).

END SPOILERS!!!!!!!!

Anyway, I thought it was great. I was a little surprised to hear they are already planning an americanized remake, which might be interesting, but a little dissapointing considering this just came out and it doesn't require a remake to be a fantastic film, but I suppose they want a wider audience.

Anyway, worth seeing for sure.

Hard to imagine an American remake being equal to the German original...but hey, that never seems to stop us.

I think a lot of the main themes can translate well into a American remake.

The film is great and I recommend it to everyone. One of the best films from 2006.

This movie is so German in every way, though. I can't imagine an American version capturing the world with anything like the same depth.

IMHO it is an easy story to adapt.

Not to get into anything political, there are a lot of things that easily translate into an American movie. State mistrust, paranoia, fear and lack of privacy.

What makes this film interesting is that the story is told mostly through Wiesler and his point of view. I hope that if they do make a remake that they will stick with this.

While I doubt it will be able to capture what Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's film was able to, if they are making a modern remake, I am sure it will be relevant. Making a film with a similar story set in the past, is even easier to do.

++++SLIGHT OLDBOY SPOILER BELOW++++

What I would really like to see is a faithful adaptation of OLDBOY and see how North America reacts to incest!

Sure, it's an easy story to adapt, and the themes are relevant, otherwise it probably wouldn't have won an Oscar. But my question is this: why the need to see all of these immediate and direct remakes? If perfectly excellent films like The Lives of Others and Oldboy already exist, why is there this compulsion to see an American version of them? It's not like they're lacking in production value. Do people simply hate subtitles that much? I'm honestly curious.

Simple answer: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Also, just because I think it would be easy to adapt, it does not mean that I want to see a remake made.

Ah, that's where I was misunderstanding you. Yes, I can totally see the perspective of a producer who sees money left on the table. What I can't understand is someone outside the system who is excited about it as an audience member. Most of the time these remakes are not as good as the originals!

As someone who has just made a movie with a lot of subtitles, I am a Concerned Citizen.
