"On The Lot" tonight

were these one minute shorts done within 24 hours also or did they have a week or several days??

There may be some confusion on this, the one minute shorts were done in a week and it looks like they did it with their own equipment.

For those 1 minute shorts I was surprised to see they allowed trailers.
Most every short-film submission normally disqualifies trailers within its rules.
Odd.

i just wish the show would describe the process more. for all us nerds out here —*there's so much i want to know. it seems like they're using their own cameras, but why don't they tell us that? what about sound, lights, etc.?

and it sounded like they got to go home to shoot these, but then one guy made it sound like it was cool for everyone to get to see what he was doing, which almost made it seem like maybe they still had a crew, actors, etc.? I don't know. Again, I just which the show would clarify what exactly these guys have to work with.

yea, now i am confused. they have been promoting the entire time that all the directors will have access to professional actors and professional crew, plus i noticed the editing on everybody's short looked professionally done or at least a drastic difference between their original shorts. plus the music sounded far from soundtrack pro BS.

so what if you have an awesome director on the show but doesnt know how to edit and is used to paying with his own money to have someone else do it? or if you have an awesome director that has no friends or money? they wouldnt have the same shot as a rich kid with no talent but has daddys deep pockets. i thought the purpose of the contest was to put everybody on the same playing field and see who comes out on top. if they have to use their own equipment then somebody's gonna be assed out.

You are confused. The purpose of the contest is to sell prime-time advertising on national TV. :)

where the hell did Ratner go?

I hate saying it, but I think this show needs an a$$hole to put things in perspective. The judges made me want to puke my f#*&%$ guts out. What a godd@mn circle jerk that was.

Carrie Ficsher or howerever the hell her name is spelled is a complete idiot. She just opens her trap and incoherent cookie cutter vanilla blatherings spew forth, just like the ideas from the "contestants". Gary Marshall is an idiot too. "Your a woman director! Good for you!" Hey d!ckhead, judge the films based soley on the content of the films alone. We don't need you to point out that she's a woman. I can clearly see that she has breasts. I kinda figured that one out for myself. What next? Is he going to tell us "Hey! Your african american! Yay!" One would think that a director would like to be judged by what he accomplished, instead of what they accomplished in spite of being a woman, or gay, or a minority etc.

And The praise that was thrown out at these sub par amature hour sh!t fests was dizzying. It's a joke. FX sucks. Yeah, whoopi, hangers in the air. Can't wait to see his big fx ridden blockbusters. I'm sure a 90 min feature by him would be just as empty, shallow and flaccid as a 3 min short.

Crazy Cab was the highlight of the night. Not because it was great, but it was soooooo damn bad that it made me feel better about myself. These are a very talented group of people though. Puking puppet aliens, putrid cups of piping hot piss, cornhole buring dihareah, and, wait for it, FARTS! Yipeeeeeee! :thumbdown

I don't doubt that some of these poeple have talent, but I haven't seen anything yet that I couldn't find on some idiots YouTube channel.

And what the hell is wrong with the host. First off, where did the original host go? Ya know, the blonde chick from the first two eps that has a sketch show on E! that I don't watch? Was she axed with Ratner? WHY does she tell us over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again that "They will win an office at dreamworks blah blah blah work with Steven Spielberg blah blah blah"? I mean, every single solitary time when coming back from and going to commercial break!!!!!! Ryan Seacrest doesn't do that sh!t! I just had to mute the mofo after a while.

Suffice to say, I hate this show.

And I will continue to watch it.

Why?

Because I'm a masochist.

Ha! Troop you should be a judge on the show! They definitely need a Simon Cowell up there. Its like watching someone praise their dog for crapping on the floor. Yay you crapped on the floor. Perhaps Sanjaya should be a contestant...

All I ask for is some constructive critisicm from these people.

That's it.

Your right jdajda, they desperatley need a Simon on this show, and I'd be more than happy to be the guest judge next week...just as long as I get Simon Cowell money.

AGREED!

I vote Super Trooper for guest judge.

Get some real critiquing (sp?) on there.

Having said that, I've been catching it in small doses on the pvr (a shitty version of TIVO here in Canada). Some of this work is painful to watch. The waky cab thing was incomprehensible. Seriously. WTF????

The modern dance "talker" was amusing as was lucky penny, and I too cringed at the CGI penny.

Marty Martin's trailer looked tight. However that wasn't what he was supposed to do so I think he kinda screwed himself there. Not to say he won't get attention for it.

The guy who did the puking alien thing. His was OK but I expected more from someone who was able to pitch so well with the priest candidate getting married idea. That's a date movie if I've ever heard it. Real chickflick stuff.

The Ghetta Rhoom (sp?) bit was funny but, yeah, the character was a retard and that completely changed how I viewed the short. It damaged the short if you weren't able to give the director the benefit of the doubt as to the characters....level of intellect. And, yeah, I typed "retard." It's a family thing.

Well, time to plant some shrubs and then take another dose of "On The Lot"

Dose....hehe.

Oh and I too was looking all over the place for what cams were being used. Everytime a DVX came on I would shout, "Hey honey, they're using the DVX like ours!!!" She doesn't care. She just doesn't care.... *sigh*

Here's to more shots of Pannys as long as this show lasts.

lol

I kept yelling to my sister, "See that, right there, see that, I have that! That's my camera they're using!"

She told me I should be out using it instead of watching other people using it.

I think she's right. :crybaby:

Well, time to plant some shrubs and then take another dose of "On The Lot"

yeah..."shrubs"...

That's probably the only way I'll be able to get through another episode too.

oh yea, whats up with all the shorts having to do with puke, piss or farting??? was that part of the rules too, to include one of those elements??

i cant believe they liked that lucky penny short. it was shot pretty decent but was pretty lame.....but nobody had a more lamer short than that cab or taxi film by the guy that was acting like a pro DP and promoting "you dont have to go to film school" hell we know that but maybe film school coulda helped you tone all the colors and effects on that 1 minute short. now i know what images crackheads see everytime they get high. :)

i didnt think all the shorts sucked though. if comedy's not your thing then i can see how it'd be hard to get some laughs if you've never done it before.

Off topic but...

I really like Zach Lipovsky. Not because of his special effects or any of that. His first listed favorite film is City of God (my favorite) and his favorite writer is Charlie Kaufman (my favorite).

Ya the crazy cab director is a little punk and I would like nothing more than to stick him in a wood shredder hair-first. Then I could yell at him "Hey, you don't need to be wood to shredded into mulch!" Now that is my idea of a one minute comedy.

Everything about this show turned corny real quick last night. The set is corny, the teleprompter blah blah was corny, and the judges were a joke. I respect their work, but they are just too nice to give any real critisim. I think an interesting thing would be to sub out Gary "I love women directors" Marshall for QT, at least he would call out bad work.

As much as this show is a letdown, I will probably keep on watching it, since 24 is over and there is nothing else left to watch on a Monday night.
