could noise be fom my cheap return on cable?

I think I discovered the culprit... the K-Tek Zeppelin's cable makes noise when I move it around and it will not go all the way into the back of the mic... at first I though this was a different type of connection but after calling Coffey Sound who has a few left they said it is not supposed to get stuck like that... Tuesday I will go get a new one but I just might still have other noisy connections... I'll check for those first and then if it doesn't work I will have to un-tape it like you suggested... sooo many little tape wraps to undo... and then to clean it.. so much work... (I used electrical tape so I have to use Goo-Gone)

is this common? to get the crackling noise from XLR connections?

It is highly UNCOMMON to get crackling noises from XLR cables, if they are hooked up correctly. Also, you should try and purchase a true beta-cam style breakaway cable as soon as you can. They are definitely worth the $200-$250.

really... I wanted to get a real snake soooo bad... but I don't have the cash for it... I looked in Ebay and found a few ok deals but an ok deal is a lot of money still...

it is good to know that people think they are actually worth it... lol

How would you rate the benefit of an "expensive" XLR over my Audio Tecnica XLRs? Should I have spend a tad more?

Next time talk to Coffey about making cables for you. I bet you can get a better deal getting custom cables from them - or learn to solder (easier said than done, as I have learned) and make your own.

Look for some posts from MattInStl for various cable options - he did a great cable comparison a while back, talking about the differences between star quad and some of the others.

Personally, I use all Canare cables (pre-made, I can't solder to save my life). Expensive, but I don't have any problems with them.

i can ask a friend to make you one , it will cost you about 175usd for 5 meter + 20 usd shipping ( 7 pin xlr brake outs) canare cable
add 50 if you want half weight ones that i use ( 14 euro per meter)

unfortunately I am on a Cup O' Noodles diet allready...

Mind giving me your opinion on the order in which I should try to get the things I need badly for my little production company?:

_ Small quiet genetaror (killed my car's battery just powering my laptop and HDD allready) will also be able to power my little fluo and Alzo lights ~ $800
_ Walkies (cheapo crapo ones) ~ $100
_ Recorder 24/96 (+) ~ $1000
_ long snake ~ $250
_ boom chair (HATE setting my boom down or leaning it with the zeppelin) ~ $?
_ 2 lavs ~ $800?
_ 2nd P2 card ~ 8G $600
_ Quad core CPU ~ $250
_ A freaking SUV!!! hahaha... ~ $10k (you guys seen how cheap they've got with the high gas prices?!?)

this gives me something to talk about till Tuesday when I get to go into Coffey and find out if the Zeppelin's cable is my only bad wire/connection :)
I know this is all over the place, but I am trying ot be able to stand alone... and I would love your opinion as to where the audio stuff should fall into the line-up
