Jiu Jitsu pics 70-200mm f/2.8L

My wife and I are planning on starting a photography business... weddings, kids, etc. Anyway, I took our new EF 70-200mm f/2.8L for a little test drive after my match at a recent jiu-jitsu tournament. I love this lens. The lighting was a little low in the gym, so I ended up with some shots that had blurred motion. I had the ISO set to 400. I suppose I might have been better off going with 800 to get a faster shutter speed. Anyway, comments / suggestions welcome. I was using a EOS Rebel 300D.

Glad you mentioned jiu-jitsu. If you hadn't I might have thought you happened on a violently public man-rape. But I digress...

The colors are gorgeous. And for low light, you seemed to have combated that problem pretty well as they are all pretty sharp...except for maybe the first one. A tad soft....but all in all, impressive colors, nice shots!

Thanks rlm7189. My wife and I shot a wedding for free a few weeks ago and used the same lens.... I'm telling you that thing is magic.

I wonder if 800 (ISO) would have been too grainy?

Not sure. I just picked up a 70-200mm 4.0L last week myself and am trying to find my way around it. Right off the bat...sexy. Very crisp shots. But its not as fast as yours so I am combating that right now. I do NOT have a very steady hand.

Jiu-jitsu is not for me, I'd rather do this with a girl :)

The photos look great and at least for that resolution I don't think you need faster shutter.

I think from a technical perspective the shots are great. i would however like to see better frozen action. Of course this is obviously without seeing any other pictures that you may have

Thanks SilverWolf. I agree with you. I had some great mid air shots, etc... but of course they were a bit blurred. The ones above only survived because the action was slow at that moment. Next time!

Damn, I knew I was doing something wrong!
I should probably write this down.
Thanks for the tip :)

if you are shooting RAW then for sure for sure shoot at a higher iso even 1600 to get atleast a middle exposure if not 1 stop over and the proper shutter speed. if you are worried about grain its better to shoot one stop over at 1600 then to shoot middle at 800 and then bring down teh exposure in camera raw later (your pics will have less grain) I have shot things at 800 iso at middle exposure on my rebel xt and with a little reduce noise printed 16"x24" prints you could hardly see any grain. THe problem is when you can't even get a middle exposure at 400+ then you see a lot fo grain in your shadows since shadows hold less data.
