What HD cameras are 4:4:4?

Well 4:4:4 isn't really a term that applies very clearly to bayer-pattern cmos imagers (dalsa, d20, red) so really its more the high-end three chippers. And Genesis which downconverts to 1080p 4:4:4. Also - I don't know how reel-stream can accuratley claim 2K 4:4:4 - how is that possible with basically a 3 x 960x540(?) mono image block? pixel shifting yes, but 4:4:4... not really! only in the fashion in which its stored. Or is that all people want? I may not understand how this works...

As nimbleal said, 4:4:4 is not really practical to accomplish with a single-chip design, you pretty much need three chips (or a Foveon) to accomplish 4:4:4 at the imager.

But then again, it depends on how it's being recorded; even HDV can approximate 4:4:4 if you downres 1440x1080 down to 720x480 standard-def.

Reel-Stream can do 4:4:4 at standard-def; I don't know that he's claiming 4:4:4 at 2k, is he?

Luzer - that's a great doc!

Thanks everyone for the responses, it'll help make up the producer's mind.

Actually - you're right... I just checked the site and 4:4:4 and 2k are mentioned entirely seperatley. However, lots of people on these boards seem to be saying 4:4:4 2K!!!! that must have been what gave me that impression. I'm sure it will be a great product.

Myself being a technical, but not THAT technical of a guy, didn't know that! I was also under the impression that it (hydra) was a 4:4:4 2k image.... that is a big difference. I am guessing the image will be a 2k @ 4:2:2?

Basically its 2k 3:1:1, as I understand it. But they have some nice algorithms to probably appoximate higher chroma res, and then it can be saved as 4:4:4 if you want.
