Right, firstly i must give credit to http://www.neilslade.com/Papers/DVXlens.html
Where i first realised that this lens can be made to fit a dvx100a.
Need:
DVX100/a/b
Aluminium od 90mm or mmore and +/- 30mm long.
Raynox XL 3000 Pro Lens
The downfall that i found with this design was that the lens was said to give some cutoff on the full image, but still not niticeable on tv.
So i ordered the lens, but in the meantime i bought some off cut aluminium from a local aluminium store. equivalent of $2.80 R30.00 local.
The outside was 90mm which is all i needed, i know it was going to be super thin so i found the smallest piece.
Next i took it and my camera to a friend who is a machineist, This is where i saved bigtime! We measured up the front of the camera and he machined it out for me. Will put up a detailed drawing soon of it. Basically cut it at the same diameter as the inside of our matteboxes and then cut a 2mm deep and 1.5mm wide grove 1.5mm into it. (will make sense when the drawing is up...)
I then put a piece of paper over the front of the dvx lens and did a rubbing to see exactly where the bayonet tabs were. I cut out the inside bit of the paper and now had a piece that would slide over the tabs on the camera. I took a marker and traced these onto the front of my nice shiny new piece of ali and this showed where to chop away.
I used my dremmel and cut them all out by hand. until it slide over the tabs nicely. this took a little trial and error, but in the end i came out nicely. I used some fine sand paper to keep it all nice and smooth as i didn'y want to scratch up the camea.
Next, the lens arrived. I snapped off the tabs for the spring mounts and unscrewed the 4 small screws holding it all together and took it all apart. (please look after your piece of glass) I took the front half of the plastic and trimmed the back down to where the lip is on the inside and completely removed the walls from where the tabs were.
now we should have a ray shade with +/- 3.5mm of lip on the back. I then measured up my shiny piece of aluminium so that the rayshade would slide in tightly and come up against the rear lip of the bayonet mount. I had this chopped off at a complete 8.5mm
The rayshade slid in perfectly and wedged into the ring.
Now the inside of the lens sits right inside the front od the dvx lens (which helps with cutoof on the corners.)
Now that it could all go together i could see where i was getting cutoff.
I then sanded out the inside of the rayshade front bit thingy in the corners as well as the outside rayshade bit, i rounded it off like the Century optics lenses.. Looks way more punk now.
Next, a lock to stop it falling off my camera. We have a nice lock built into the stock mattebox, so i used the same plan. I used a 4mm little hex key bolt with a plain unthreaded end. ( one of the long pedal pins from the Odyssey JC pedals for all you bmxers out there) Marked the right place on the ring for the lock to go and drilled it out and tapped it, it now screws in and locks against the tab with the flat bit sticking off.
So thats where i'm up to now.
Unfortunately there are no decent anodizers in this area so i cant make it a nice balck, so i'm gonna have to spray the inside matte black with a rattle can and to the outside with a nice thick nail polish. to stop it chipping...
Enjoy the pics. Drawing of the aluminium ring coming soon.
