Mitsubishi HD1000U HD

Interesting. Mitsubishi makes the finest RP/DLP HDTVs, bar none (well, along with Pioneer Elite). Seems odd that wouldn't carry over to their projectors. Of course, the projector might not be on par with their Diamond series TVs.

Thanks guys,

I know the Sony, great indeed. Actually I was hoping the Mitsubishi can be competitive, not only Price wise. And I am wondering about Sonys contrast ratio how it is achieved. 10.000:1 sound crazy for the price.

10,000:1 is kind of misleading. its actually like 6,000:1 or something. but the TV will on the fly make the image brighter or darker depending on whats on screen, so it s actualy Darkest dark Range, and brightest bright is 10,000:1, but its neve on screen at the same time....

I really disapprove of their business model. However, whatever the case, the sony XRD TV's and Projectors do look really good.

A lot of it has to do with the lens, too. The edges of the image on the Mits were getting soft, and showed some aberrations (on multiple units). Most low-end HT front projectors use the same projection technology.

I went to a seminar in Chicago last year and they showed some pics of the TI guys testing the range on their high-end projectors. They literally take test-lab theater and cover the WHOLE entire thing in black, seal the room shut, and then send in a guy in an all-black suit to hold up a light meter while they send a black signal through the projector. Then they do the opposite for the white or bright measurement. So, take those ratios with a grain of salt...you'll never replicate the measurements that they're marketing.

I'm NOT a brand-freak loyalist by any means. However, of the display equipment I've owned through the years, Sony's been consistently good.

I haven't seen an HD1000 yet, but my experience with the Mitsubishi DLP units has always been good. (And their LCD's, for that matter, although the LCD's have tended to be a little more "high-maintenance" than some other brands.) Honestly, the HD1000 is what I've been planning to use for my own home theater as soon as I scrape the cash together... :)

My experience is limited to LCD projectors. I know that they have problems with constant use. I have also heard about the rainbow effect with DLP but never witness it, is it that bad ? I mast find time and go and see for myself, in the meanwhile any advise is appreciated.

Andreas

some people are sensitive to the rainbow effect. I am. its terrible, the whole picture goes psychadelic when you move your eye.

I am starting leaning towards Sony and LCD technology. The web is full of horror stories regarding the rainbow effect ! Whats funny is I am getting a hard time finding a descent DVD player with upconverting SD to HD capabilities. This thread should be renamed "help me with the SD to HD transformation of my home theater setup !" I thought the market was mature enough. Wrong. Not to many products available, not to many reviews/articles either. I cannot find a single side by side comparison between SONY and MITSUBISHI. And there is no announcement for HDMI max length. I actually read somewhere that 50ft should work or... it may not...
Choosing the right PJ is going to be the last of my problems :)
