Cutting footage from a DVD-R camcorder.

I'm been hired to edit a small internal-corporate video/commercial which was shot by one of the employees on one of those DVD-R camcorders. My one problem is how do I 'capture' or copy the audio/video files/clips to my Mac? I've got no clue. The files in the VIDEO_TS folers are not accessible.

Deadline is Friday.

Thanks so much,

RK

not sure. the disc is a sony 1.4gb, accucore. most dvd-r camcorders are not built for editing?

That's right. Many of the consumer one's come with their own proprietary PC software for editing which is why no one ever shoots anything important with one. Your best best would be to get a hold of the camera and dub it to DV tape.

Alternatively you could try to 'rip' the DVD into MPEG-2 files and convert those into QuickTimes. Maybe MPEG-Streamclip or Handbrake would be of assistance here.

easiest and fastest way to aquire that footage is to play the dvd thru a dv cam and capture firewire. dvx will do this in vcr mode. anytime someone gives me stuff to edit on dvd, i capture this way. quicker than handbrake and no rendering in your nle. in fcp, just set your cam control to "non-controllable device", play the dvd and hit "capture now".

The firewire option is a good way to go. Though I prefer to use a set top DVD player w/ DV Out rather than feed through another device (and possibly add some additional degrading). Those players can be tricky to find though unfortunately.

MPEG Streamclip I think will be a good choice for you. Just Google it. Its a free application. Drag the .VOB files inside the VIDEO_TS into its interface and then do your export. It can export with a DV codec which is very FCP friendly. Good luck.

Oh and as for the camcorders that record onto DVD-R's not being NLE friendly, well that is certainly true for the most part. But being that its a Sony camera, I'm sure the specific intention of the overall workflow is to try and motivate those folks who buy the camera to then buy Sony Vegas for editing (it can natively edit with .VOB files).

cheers.
