Does anyone else instantly think a person is retarded...

when they use the word "loose" in place of "lose"?

No, but when I was a kid I had an excellent grasp of pronunciation, so I always hated it when other kids pronounced Library as Liberry, Popsicle-Pocksicle, Backpack-Packpack, Napkin-Nackin, etc.

plz bugs the heck out of me, or even worse u. Instant loss of 50% credibility.

I have butter fingers so i have lots of mistakes in my typing. But intentional misspellings do bug me. i hate the following:

"I miss u 2"
"PLZ"
"STFU"

makes me cringe.

The internets are global, so some usages are appropriate even if not in your neighborhood. Loose/lose happens to fall into that category.

those are two different words?

Um yes?

Loose - adjective, not tight
Loose - verb, let go (pronounced same, though meaning is different)
Lose - verb, lost

All three have entirely different meanings. Anyway just thought I'd throw that out whilst this render numbs my brain.

I'm not aware of any English dialect where "loose" is a correct alternate spelling for "lose," or vice-versa. They're completely different words with different origins.

David, you lost me there.

Also, are and our. They're, their and there seems to confound a lot of the population. People want to use they're as a possessive. That makes me crazy - especially when it comes from someone I'm supposed to take seriously.

Mistakes in a rapid-fire forum environment are one thing, but when these mistakes find their way into edited material, all credibility goes right out the window.

Completely agree.

Speaking of this I love that commercial with the little girl and her mom arguing in texting/internet jargon. The look of the mom at the end is priceless.

That's funny -- when I first started using text messaging, I typed out EVERYTHING in complete words and sentences. It drove other people crazy. After about six months, I finally relented and started using IM-speak, but I deplore using those terms in email. I still write out everything formally in an email.

Even after I started using IM-speak for IMs, I still hated "K" for "O.K." What, you are so busy you cannot type one extra letter??? But, alas, I now find myself doing that as well.

Of course, I still spell-check my posts and will modify them when a typo slips through. Having said that, I better double-check this one now...

Misuse of plural possessives and the word "myriad" drive me crazy, too. Also, "toward" (the American English version) vs. "towards" (the British English version).

Stop me, I could go on and on. My first job after college was copy editing for a weekly newspaper headed up by a very old-school editor...

Would that most of them (and everything else) could still be.
