I'm on the verge of getting Vegas...

...and I have a few questions.

I'm in the final stages of shooting my second feature documentary. On my first film, I used an outside editor, but I'm seriously thinking of editing this one myself (for budget reasons and also so I can put my my camera and equipment to work).

The doc was shot on the DVX100B in 24PA.

So, what do you guys think of this setup?

Also, do I need a production monitor and Serious Magic DV Rack?

I don't have a clue about Acid. I have some original music slated for the film, but I'll need some sort of score also. With Acid, can I incorporate piano, guitar, violin sounds, etc?

What other software or equipment will I need to do an adequate job on this? Can anyone recommend any color correction and audio programs I may need?

Thanks for the help?

-Bill

I'd have to say you'll be far better off buying the computer and Vegas separately. You can do much, much better, price-wise.

You can incorporate anything you want with ACID. But you've also got 90% of the functionality of ACID already on the Vegas timeline.

Vegas's color-correction is just fine, and its audio tools are top-notch. So, you don't "need" anything else, unless you're so advanced that you find the tools available already in Vegas to be limiting.

As for needing a production monitor and DV Rack, aren't you already almost done shooting?

DV Rack doesn't help you at all with editing. The production monitor (or at least a calibratible TV) is essential for color-correction, though.

You can get a computer better than that if you build it yourself. There's a post in the cafe with tons of info on custom PCs right now.

Thanks guys!

I don't know that I'm competent to build my own computer, but it makes sense to buy the computer & Vegas separately. Any suggestions on a good reliable computer set up for Vegas?

I got a core-2 6600 processor, XP Pro, 2gig of ram (667 or 800), 500G Sata HD, Firewire card and a 7900 NVIDIA GS. Compared to my old PC this thing screams! I bought a referbished Dell then added the graphics card and Firewire card myself. Easy and reliable. Could be cheaper building your own, but you have to support it yourself. My friend does that, but he ends up having to tweak the bios and little issues crop up.

I bought the video card so I would get better performance from Adobe AE. Vegas doesn't use the vid card much (if at all for rendering).

Good luck!

The fact is that the video card is never used at all in video editing. The video card is the one that does all the internittent math to display things on your screen. Thats it. Its effects are seen in enhanced viewing of 3d games, or visualizations. Complex geometry and fx display in real time etc. Primarily games. It does not affect/enchance/speed up the rendering at all.
