World's most powerful PC for MXF in Vegas

Hi Killfilm.

Can you answer these questions.

1. Are your project settings exactly set up right for 720p? By that I mean in the projects table have you selected the (progressive mode) and the corect aspect in the dropdown to 1.0000 (SQUARE)?

2. How many fps are you getting in Preview mode quality as fullscreen playback with both ( color correction with slight desaturated ) and colour curves, crushing some backs...Does it hole a full 25fps (PAL or 29 (NTSC)

3. Are you using the Raylight plug in for MXF at the best quality? If not then what setting do you have it at? Apparently the new beta version is better for playback as it uses DX9 addressing within windows.

Thanks in advance.

The Raylight benchmarks can be found here
http://dvfilm.com/raylight/raylightSpeed.htm

3.0 was released today, it's no longer a Beta.

The update does make things preview a little smoother while editing.

I was running a Dual Core AMD 4800+ with 4gb of RAM and 2 X 350 GB RAID 0 setup and cutting MXFs at 1280x720 and had the Vegas properties set to Preview Full. It held full screen previews on the new GREEN Raylight setting all the way

However as soon as I added color correction it dropped to 20 fps.

Raylight 3 is better than 2 as you get better fps , it takes advantage of the DX9 addressing. I would say that a Core 2 Duo would handle it.

I would be interested in finding out what everybody else is getting from the Raylight release

for vegas 7.0 it might be the Duo Extreme, then again I haven't heard about render times with the Quads which while not "supported" they do work...

A Q6600 is essentially dual Duos... but they don't OC as well as the E6600 and higher Duos so for the 32-bit world you might want to get a Duo... it is all a matter of whether Vegas 7.0 uses the 3rd and 4th cores or not.

2GB of fast RAM but 3 helps a little and 4 helps a tiny tiny bit more

if you CC with GPU intensive apps then SLI'ed (dual) NVIDIA 8000 GTX cards

Seagate 7200.10 drives give you 130MB/s in RAID0 and they are cheap (plenty fast for multiple streams in Edius so once Vegas can handle it these will be good enough)

Hi Latin,

How many cores does Vegas use anyway?

May start a thread on this one...

I heard that the Core Quad heats up pretty quickly and in some instance,s depending on how much your taxing the processor , you could fry an egg of the motherboard! Cutting on the fry or is it fly...I dunno! Sorta gives multitasking a new appeal. Cut while ya cook!?

I also heard that a RAID 5 setup with 4 x 500GB drives igves you the access power of 150MB/s. as it uses three drives for access and the fourth is a backup drive incase one of them crashes and you dont lose data.

It might be a good thing for power users cutting HD content to also consider the RAID 5 setup because of the data security issue incase a drive fails.

I am only concerned with playback since render times are good enough for me.. but

aparently Vegas 7 uses only one core for previews and all available for render

Quads run significantly hotter than Duos... Kholi is having a hard time with his cooling at a nice but not top overclock at 3.0... at stock speeds there are many coolers that will keep 'em super-cool

with a good controller (I use the 680i NVIDIA south bridge) you can get 130MB/s which is overkill for 1080p... back up for me is manual (copy what I care about elsewear) but you could get one of those RAIDs going... I will move on to a 4-bay external where I hope to have two RAID0's set up as a RAID1 meaning two identical RAID0 backed up 100% and real-time... but I haven't looked enough into the different RAID's available yet... the cheapest way to get 130MB is to get a RAID0 and manually back up to a single drive...

No, that can only be true for single-thread codecs. When using Raylight, up to 8 cores will used at the same time, for both preview and rendering.

Likely by the end of the year I will bump that up to 32 cores.

I noticed both my cores running at about 70% or higher, but I didn't want to relay that info as something certain cause I haven't heard from anyone experiencing the same. I believe I noted that on a popular thread but didn't get a response... so I guess I can verify your findings/info further from my experience.

However... With my 3.15GHz E6300 (the Duo that runs at 1.86 stock) I get a light but significant choppy experience when previewing a single clean (no FX/transitions) 1080/24PA track... I would think that Vegas should be able to handle the preview with my CPU speed but somehow it is still less than butter-smooth... Is this from the 32-bit architecture? Would running Vegas under XP 64-bit help?

I also wonder what a Q6600 OC'ed to 3.2GHz would do with Vegas 7... and also what it will do with Vegas 8.0...?

Raylight Green (Release 3.0) should be able to do that full screen on the external monitor with the Preview Half setting and assuming you have a dual-head video card that supports Direct X. If you look at our benchmarks we show total CPU utilization of only 42% on an AMD 4400 (2.2 GHz dual core).

A 64-Bit Vegas platrom might help give HD editors what they demand for full screen p1080 i playback, with transitions, color correction and colour curves ...After all it is one of Vegas' many pluses - that you can preview in realtime give the fact that you have enough processor power and RAM

but I hear Edius handles the footage better. Perhaps Vegas 8 might allow more cores to be used or a switchable setting to chose where the cores are divided...Either Render or Pre-viewing.

The larger and more uncompressed HD footage gets the more PC based HD editors aree going to have to really pull out all the stops if they are to keep up with MAC users and the OS platform.

Were holding off on purchasing a new PC in the meantime while we wait and see just what evewrybody else is getting out of Vegas and HD.

Raylight is the best option right now. Guess Sony will just have to keep up...

More cores for Preview is the way.

yea but that doesn't solve my problem... I want full rez full screen 1:1...

Since your machine is faster than our benchmark system, and ours is running with almost 60% CPU idle, it should be possible. The difference between 1/2 res and full res is not as great as you might think since the decoder is generating the full image regardless, the only difference is how many pixels the vegas fx filter has to post-process before writing to the display buffer. Why not try it in Green and report back to us?

Further to Latins

I have just tested an MXF (not anAVI converted from Raylight)720pn 1280 x 720 PAL clip on the timeline in Vegas and on the secondary monitor will full screen 25fps PAL clip and the Raylight plug in set to the new GREEN setting and it plays fine. I have not tested a 1080i or p clip for this post as yet.

The drives I am using are 2 x 350 7200rpm set up on RAID 0. It's a dual core AMD 4800+ with 4gb or RAM

However as soon as I add a gradient map or color correction filter it drops to a little under 20fps.

Which means that I cannot preview effects in realtime( Vegas' big bonus with DV)

Setting the preiew to half, it handles as many as 4 layered filters without dropping.

Vegas uses only 1 core while previewing which seems to be it's biggest pitfall, while Edius apparently uses 2...please confirm this is true.

I am starting a post on this forum about Sony's pending release of Vegas 8 to up the amount of cores used by the program for previewing. This will certainly let PC and Vegas users have more power while cutting ANY footage.

ok... sorry it took so long to come check on this thread again... I must have skipped it one day in a rush...

just got a fresh XP-32 install and wasted no time to get Vegas 7.0e and Raylight in it (and Magic Bullet), that's when I noticed Raylight was not Beta anymore and saw the charts... good job guys, you keep doing all the things we want before we think of them...

I am rendering right now but as soon as it is done I will try and switch out the secondary with the 1920 x 1200 and bench 1080/24pa at full screen bit, and I'll take notes of CPU load... like you guys did...

But in the meantime let me leave a question with you guys... (not that you are up :) ) : What is that stealth display adapter? Does it help? Also... is it better to setup the preview window on the primary monitor?

1080/24pa E6300 at 3.15GHz 4x1GB (3.3GB seen by XP-32) 4-4-4-12-2T @ 950mHz
RAID0 2 x Seagate 7200.10 @ 134 MB/s
Vegas 7.0e, Preview Full, on secondary 1920 x 1200 monitor

Blue NRT... only 18fps but the CPU was not pegged... most the time it was at 91%
Green (I need to configure it right I think... will fix and edit)
Yellow 51 to 37% so about 44%

I am less than impressed with the performance of my system... though I recently encountered a bug associated with the cooling of my North Bridge (memory controller) which might be bugging down exactly this sort of thing... I should get proper cooling for it today though...

two more questions...

91% might not be 100% but is is close... so I wonder if 64-bit will indeed help... it is supposed to be more effective but how much of a gain should we expect?

also, I can put money down for a Q6600 with first dibbs on steppings, but I am not sure if the Q6600 at say 3.2GHz do in-fact offer higher preview performance than say an E6600 at 3.5GHz... at least... will a 3.2GHz Q6600 be significantly faster than my E6300 at 3.15GHz? I don't know what Vegas 7.0e does with Quads during previews

It's nothing special , just a dual head adaptor, I chose it from the blackmagic HD qualified systems (we have an HD extreme for mastering to tape) but is obsolete now and no longer sold.

You need to use Green for real time playback. Note that it depends on the P2 Viewer installed and right now that is XP SP2 only.

EDIT:
Ok.... here are the benches with P2 drivers installed, same setup, EDIT same clip though:
(BTW I am only testing MXFs)

Blue ... I got 18fps again... CPU hit 69% and 93%
Green ... still have to fix mine
Yellow... 30% to 50%
