I'm looking for a decent affordable mattebox for my new HVX, I've heard about VOCAS, PETROFF, DAKOTAPODS INDIE SNAP and few others...

Dakotapods looks decent but the french flags are not adjustable(big thing for me), too bad. The other ones are out of my budget range.

Any advice?

thanks
G.

Check out the geardear... www.geardear.com

I think it is a terrific bargain and works quite nicely with HVX with or without rods (but I would not personally like to make a habit of hanging anything on the HVX lens without rod support).

Cavision offers a pretty wide array of matteboxes that fall about midway (pricewise) between the Geardear/Indiesnap and Chrozsiel/Petroff/Vocas. Some people hate them, but I think they offer a pretty good value for the price. I've had a Cavision 3x3 that I use with a DVX100 for about 5 years now and it compares favorably with the Chrosziel I had prior to that.

I ordered a Vocas knock off from an Indian company at http://www.camera-shop.ca/camshop/. They also make the mattebox for Vision West and Cinecity. Warning: The design is great (it's a Vocas ripoff), but it's far from a Vocas. It works but the trays don't hold my filters securely unless it's in the mattebox. Paint on the eyebrow chips easily. The rod system is a joke. The metal is so soft, I can bend it into place and use and gravity will bend it right out.

It only cost 200.00 and I bought it as a stop gap until the RedRock becomes available. It's small and lightweight and works with a good set of rods (they sent me rods by mistake - never ordered them). In short it holds filters, blocks flare and fits in my kit. The downside are it's trays suck and the materials be it metal or plastic are poor.

I money weren't an object, my vote is for a VOCAs. Beautifully built, slightly cheaper and smaller than a Chros.

For filters call Filter Gallery in NYC. They're great. Don't buy cheap filters. And stay away from the HVX 1/8 and 1/64 built in ND. Really degrades the image. HVX really dropped the ball on that.

Do you have any comparison shots or pics of the difference between the built in ND and mattebox nd filters? I never heard of the built in nd filters degrading the image.

Hello,

I would checkout the Formatt matte box and the Cinetactics. We sell both of those if you need any more help.

Best regards,
