Good Deal on Core2Duo Lappy w/PCMCIA

This was at Best Buy today:
Core 2 Duo - 1.6Ghz
2 Gig Ram
160 Gig HDD
15.4" Widescreen
SD card reader.
PCMCIA Slot.

Pretty Nice. Overkill for a P2 offloader, but probably great for that and DV Rack or something. If your on EDIUS, you could probably get some pretty nice realtime editing out of it too.

Only problem (as is becoming to common with new lappys) VISTA. Blah.

850 bucks. Nice deal. Weighs a little over 6 pounds I think. They have the 1.73ghz version for like eleven hundred.

Oh yeah. It's a Gateway, if you were wondering.

I bought a similar machine (ACER) same price, for my wife a couple of weeks ago . . . same features, NO FIREWIRE. Doens't matter much to her though.

That looks similar to my Acer.... err, except mine has a 20.1" screen, heh :)

Ah nice. Mine is a 14" screen but it looks pretty damn good, sharpness wise. Works well too, the Vista is ok, seems like a "1.5" version of XP though. Mac OSX ftw!
Oh ya, I got mine just to use as a P2 dumping station and to surf the net out in the streets or field.

I hate Vista. Mainly because it seems to be a hog on resources, has a lot of 'fat' and isn't backwards compatible with a lot of programs. But, I must say... I've been screwing with Vista here on this Gateway... after trimming out some of the crap, it's fairly intuitive. So far, it's running smooth, and I don't have any complaints as far as the interface goes, at first look. It seems as though it would be easier for less experienced users to navigate their way around and customize their settings, etc.

My Lappy (the Acer I mentioned) is running Media Center Edition xp w/ sp2. Media center is a bit of a hog too, but...

I'm using my lappy as my sole editing machine. I did take it out in the field twice on jobs. But, they were jobs where it could be plugged in the whole time. Forget about using this 20" beast on battery. Pointless.

I'm looking to get a smaller one for field use in the future, when I have the extra funds. I might look at this gateway I'm screwing with... once vista support rolls around for EDIUS. I could use it for editing too... on some smaller projects, when I am on the road, for example... but that's down the road. Don't need it... yet :)

Anyways. Some of the reports I've read on battery power for this Gateway are 5-7 hours. Not too shabby at all.

Another vouch for Acer at the UK end of things - I've got two - a travel mate power house for mobile editing and a cheaper aspire, both been really good.

http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Acer_TravelMate_8215WLMi_Br_Laptop_LX.TEG06.034/version.asp

That's the newer core2 version of my travel mate on offer - still not cheap even though it's come down from £2000 - but it has 2ghz core 2 processor and 160gb hard drive. Also has blu-ray player, but I'm not sure of the relevance of this to us.

Screen is 1680x1050, and non-reflective which I prefer ...

Anyway, this is pretty much top of the range for acer at the moment.
