I am currently shooting a documentary about a highschool sports team and am using wireless set up. I have a boom operator that carries a boom with a Sennheiser shot gun in a zepplin hard wired to channel 3 of the Sound Devices 302 mixer. He also carries two wireless receivers in channel 1 and 2 that are either transmitted to from a lavaliere or a static shot gun located on a stand in a strategic position. The sound devices transmits to my HVX via two wireless transmitters attached to the XLR master line out. Two receivers are on camera and I monitor at the camera through headphones. In some scenarios, I also turn on the internal mics to get 4 channels of sound. I shoot everything 720P/24fps.We start the shoot out doing a 1K slate tone to set levels on the HVX. So far, it's been working good. There is no way I could shoot 80% of what we do with a tethered sound guy. Typically, he is anywhere from 25 - 60 feet from me with a boom picking up dialogue and grunts and groans. We've worked out some hand signals so he knows where I'm shooting and what my frame lines are.
