To Jan: My HDVX100 Wishlist...

Frankly it's not much. I want it to do everything a DVX can do, only in HDV or I guess ACHDV is the new thing. But keep in mind, I have ton of movement in my films. Contrary to what some have said I've seen HDV handle movement quite well so I hope ACHDV can do the same. I guess the rest is basic:

1. Progressive Chips
2. A nice lens, doesn't have to be removeable.
3. True 16:9 and a 1:85 squeeze. (My last film was 1:85 but we did play with it to get 16:9 for the PSP and iPod but on the Apple TV version it's 1:85).
4. 1080i, 1080i/24p, 720/24p
5. A capable screen or some great focus assist, but I would like one of those drop top screen's like Sony's FX1 has.
6. I want the option to shoot on tape or shoot tapeless. The SD solution is cheaper. It should be sleek like the FX1 but lighter.

yea basically you want an HVX.

Except the HVX is capable of alot more than that.

If you read that wishlist again you will see the camera I want is certainly NOT the HVX.

It certainly looks like the hvx has all that. Why don't you spell it out for us then?

Then get an A1..... Thats practically what youre asking for. a 1080 24p, HDV camera. Sure it doesnt shoot 720p, but just down res the 1080 later if you need it. And 1.85:1 you can crop off the 1080p. Sure it doesnt have 1080p chips, but you'd never know the difference.

im starting to like the H1/A1/G1 more and more.

To my knowledge the HVX doesn't do HDV or ACHDV. You have to buy into the whole P2 set which simply IS NOT CHEAP. The HVX gives you the choice to go to tape only for SD DV not HD. For those of us without deep pockets the SD card solution works better that the P2 solution. The HVX is not sleek, the FX1 is. Also no camera I know of does a 1:85 squeeze. Also three CMOS chips (which I added in later).

The need for the HDVX100 would be the ability to have a camera in the $3,200 price range that utilizes ACHDV format and won't compete with the HVX (the HVX has more features). It would be the camera to grab all the folks looking the cheaper Canon A1, which I was looking at, while retaining the HVX market. Even if they went totally tapeless the camera would be cheaper, about $2700 (but I do want the option). The DVD option is okay but with all the movement we do I'm unsure about that.

Think about it, all they would have to do it mod the HDC-SD1 specs to a bigger camera. They have the technology (check out the HDC-SD1) so all they'd have to do is put that into a DVX100 (or PDX10) style body. And since they could make these cameras so small how about internal storage. A DVX100 sized camera would have room for that. The camera should continue down the black and sleek cylindrical path as far as looks go.

Basically I want the AG-HSC1U at the size of a DVX100 (maybe a little smaller). This allows for internal storage or for built in rack capable of holding up to five SD cards. Basically an HVX for those who can't afford the HVX solution. Considering the price tag for the AG-HSC1U is $2,099.00 (street price being $1,800) this camera would be about $700 more. The JVC GZ-HD7 Everio has 3CCD a 60GB Hard Disk Drive and does 1920x1080 High Definition.

This is my wishlist:

1. ACHDV Format

2. 3 1/3 CCD or CMOS Chips

3. 1:85 squeeze.

4. A 4:8 option (which many cameras do have)

5. 1080i, 720/24p and I'd like 1080/24p as an option.

6. A capable screen or some great focus assist, but I would like one of those drop top screen's like Sony's FX1 has. (Which again the HVX doesn't have)

7. It should be sleek like the FX1 but lighter and smaller. The camera should be about the size of the DVX or the PDX10.

8. I still want the option to shoot on tape while shooting on SD card but the ability to shoot on SD or Tape seperately. The SD solution is cheaper than P2. I do think internal removeable storage trumps it all, but what happens when the storage goes out (considering these are just harddrives)? I could care less everyone else wants to go tapeless as I know working in a completely digital infrastructure is generally foolish. But if I has to be just tapeless, a removeable HD system a built in SD/SDHC card block system is the way to go.

Now the above is the HDX100 (not the HVX).

I'm looking at that too, but I'm waiting to see what ACHDV has to offer.

HVX's prices are dropping. By the time a camera similar to that is released... you'll be able to find an HVX @ 3000.00.

If money is the issue.

and by then the P2 cards will bequite inexpensive. Especially the 4gig and 8 gig cards. i imagine in a year the 4 gigers cuold be had for 200$ 8 gigers around 35-400, and the 16 gigs at 750$.

The 4 GB cards are discontinued. I suspect the 8 GB cards will be soon. The 16 GB cards will probably retail at $750 the day they're released.

True but the same problems exist. Even a 16gig P2 at $750 is a lot more than $79 for 8 gigs which will store 88 mins of top quality ACHDV. $395 for 5. More than enough. Pricewise P2 cant beat that. I'm not against a one time purchase of 1 32 gig P2 card but even then 5 SDHC cards is 40gigs of space at 88 mins per card.

So even at $3000 for a used HVX versus $3000 for a new HDVX100 the HDVX still wins in the value department. Plus I can still make an HD DVD, HD Master or output to film, an HD TV show, and even a film print if one is needed (which I'm sure a studio would pay for). If this is released it will sale and still people like me (thinking about the Canon cams) back to Panasonic. Think about it, Canon's not stupid. It was only Panasonic and Sony involved with ACHDV at first now Canon's on the ACHDV tip. Why? You know why. They're waiting to see how this floats so they can tweak it and make their own "HDVX100". That's what they did with the A1. I think the GZ-HD7 is very innovative and JVC may be on to something. And why are Sony and Panasonic sparring the bps? Because they're going to make Prosumer cameras that record the higher rates.

"Top quality"is a bit misleading here . . . it may be the "top quality" shot by the current Panasonic pro AVCHD camera, but it's not the top quality possible with AVCHD, to say nothing of AVC-Intra. It's only 13 Mb/s. AVCHD can go up to 24. And AVC-Intra will do 50 and 100.

Exactly. You see where I'm coming from. They're holding back for some reason and I definitely believe Pro-ACHDV is coming for Prosumer cameras at 24Mbs.

Then maybe they should look at 60gb internal storage. And if 16gb P2 cards are coming then 16gb SDHC cards cant be far behind. P2 is still too expensive for the low budget guys with a DV infrastructure already in place that maybe able to upgrade Final Cut Studio but not buy a whole new set up (extra hardware + storage).

16gig p2 = 4 4gig SDHC cards. 32gig p2 = 4 8 gig cards.

Somebody actually posted a thread about 16gig sdhc cards the other day. But, they cost 3500 dollars :)

Basically what you are asking for is what barry has been saying for months. AVCHD DVX. The HVX chipset in a dvx size form factor, records to sd cards. Shoots 720p and 1080.

Yes, Barry is right on the money. Speaking of money, $3500 for a $16gb SDHC card? Is that a misprent? Are they high. Internal storage is the future. 1 60gb drive should be more than enough. But either way you can still simply buy mulitple 8 gb SDHC cards. Curious, how much do you think an 8gb card will hold with ACHDV running at 24mbs? Any ideas?

Appx 40 minutes. Give or take.
Then we can always drop down to 720p and that should give us more space right? I mean if I remember another conversation on this topic 1080 isn't even displayed on most HD sets. Isn't it scaled down 720.
