what did you use before Edius, and why did you switch?

Hi,

I am having a hard time choosing with NLE i want to edit my upcoming short with, which is being shot on sd DV at 24pa.

Is edius good for my needs?

why did you choose edius over the others?

Mike

If you just want to edit 24pa in dv, your best bet is probably Vegas. It's more affordable than most of the nle's, and it is very robust. There is also great support for 24p.

I use EDIUS because of its awesome support for the HVX and P2. No other NLE currently has the comprehensive support and compatibility for p2 and all of the HVX's shooting modes. Plus, it's a super powerful NLE when it comes to real-time performance.

Jason

I used Vegas before EDIUS, Vegas is perfect for the DVX. When I got the HVX I tried out FCP and EDIUS, preferred EDIUS greatly because of its P2 integration. But now that RayLight supports MXF natively in Vegas, I'm migrating back to Vegas.

I also like being able to mix multiple formats on the same timeline without needing to acquire a PhD in EE.

Don't like the lack of integration with other popular products.
Sure wish we could get Barry or a knowledgable user to write a good manual for it.

(also own/use PP2, DVRackHD, RayLight, Avid Xpress).

Been a premier user for ten years. Switched to Edius because its stable and fast. Not as detailed in the audio department though.

i'm having a real hard time decideing between vegas-PP2-edius.

So far i have vegas and PP2 loaded... vegas isn't clicking very well for me.... i know it has a better 24p workflow, but PP2 just seems easier and more powerful to me.

I'm a photshop and illustrator user so PP2 isn't that hard a program to learn. Vegas on the other hand really feels cheap and i hate the effects and how they are applied... it feels like windows movie maker.

My First was a Toaster Flyer, migrated to Adobe, with Cineform, Then to Apple FCP, I updated to Edius for better workflow of the HDV JVC H10, and later the Sony HDV VX1. When the HVX200 came out it just seem to work so smooth with Edius Broadcast. and Is still my favorite.

Maybe someday the Flyer will be revived.

Been a premiere user too for some years (with Raptor card inside...) and was really disappointed of the stability and the changes in the whole "audio-rendering" starting from Premierpro....i still dont get the sense/urge of that...i am very happy with Edius, specially with the HVX, putting different footage in one timeline is great..!

I do wish changes for some parts a the others do: improve the Audio-capability ( cant repeat that often enough: doc-people NEED the ability to auto-sync lockit-like applications....), i have some hope for that part, as i heard from my dealer that they plan mayor improvements with the next big update.

And id like to see a better implementation of 3rd party products (like AE for example), but i have few hope for that....however, for CC and even keying i guess Edius is mostly underrated, its probably more powerful here than most of us think....i am still exploring that..!

Same here, combination of all of the above. Premiere Pro to Edius.

Edius is very efficient, robust and well mannered. Format handling is the best I've ever seen.

Downsides, thirdy party support is poor, and I find some creative restrictions (colour correction is a bit naff).

But otherwise it is my main P2 centre piece.

I'm the same, Premiere Pro at home and now to Edius. Use FCP at work but didn't want to invest in a mac portable at the time as the screens too small for HD and the lack of PCMCIA card slot for P2.

ROne, it looks like 4.5 will have improved colour correction tools so fingers crossed.

I can't wait. My copy of Edius arrives this wednesday [2 days]

hey Major,
Please keep us informed on the new Edius. I'd sure like to know what changes they have made from a user rather than from the company. Seems like they really need to hire some Premier Pro, Avid, Vegas and FCP Gurus and have them sit with their development team to make their super robust core into a Beautifully integrated GUI program. I have my figers crossed.

Hey Siniarch !

My version 4 Edius arrived today ! What can I say? P2 straight out of the box, real time editing, real time flipping of video [my footage being from my 35 mm adaptor]

Its all nice. I've got to get used to things being in different places to FCP and Premiere.

Once I've had a week to do some editing with it I will post how I'm finding it ! And then once I have the update [4.5] I'll post about that.

So far very postiive!!

Thanks dude.

Yeah, I think Edius is amazing. The speed is just crazy.

I'm interested in 4.5. let me know when you get the update.
Thanks.

I'm totally looking forward to v4.5 for more than one reason. I think it will be a good indicator of where T/GV is headed with EDIUS. And, one thing I think makes a lot of people apprehensive about 'jumping on board' is the user interface, as you also said.

That said... I've said it a million times, and so have others, if you really want to experience the P2 workflow as it is meant to be, a PCMCIA slot, and EDIUS is the only way to go, from that point of view. Just talking about workflow, speed and power. But, that is worth the price of admission to me.

If there is still a broadcast version of the demo, you should check it out siniarch.

I feel the same way Jason. I own an old DV Storm card (and canopus was doing real time DV editing with 4-5 streams and tons of effects and titles before anyone. All the other manufacturers had to use hardware and maybe 1-2 streams only. so I was hooked to canopus back then), but my friend has edius and I've played with it. Its super fast. I don't mind the interface, I just wish it had more intuitive functions. And maybe they do and i just don't know them.

ex. I sat with another friend who has vegas, and he was selecting from the 3rd clip of a track to the last. so he right clicked and there was a menu item that said select from this clip to the end. in edius i selected the clip (zoomed in because it was a long time-line) then zoomed out, held the shift key and selected the last one. then zoomed back in to see what I was doing. Just cumbersome when you see that someone is doing the same 4-5 clicks in 1 click. And it was intuitive because he just right clicked to see if he could do it, and there it was.

These are the little things that edius needs to improve on. I personally love shortcut keys. they just make everything faster, but when learning you should be able to get to the functions through menus fast. and the menus should show you the short cut so you can learn and go faster.

I did a google search for version 4.5 and it seems like they did an overhaul on the GUI which is great. Lets see what they did in terms of color correcting and ability to interact with other party software plug-ins.

I Owned In Sync Speed Razor 8 yrs ago. Worked with Media 100 at work 10yrs ago. Have worked with DPS velocity at a tv station for last 5 yrs. Edited with Premiere Pro for the last year for all my freelance work. Bought Edius last month and I like it better than all the others!!

I wonder if once all the other nle programs start supporting P2 files will Edius still be having strong sales. hmmm
