Help! No sound with 720pn 30fps

Hello:

I've had the HVX200 for almost a year now and shot exclusively in 720pn 24, to keep my shots standardized.

Yesterday I experimented with other frame rates, and they all seem fine except for 720pn 30 which will capture picture but no sound. The sound bars are not active in this mode.... either through the onboard mikes or with external mikes.:
Sound is ok in the 720p 30 (non native mode).

What gives?

Do I have a camera defect? Or is this some undocumented feature (non-feature)?

Thanks

If you switched over the recording format in the record set up menu to 720/30pn but left the frame rate in the scene file menu at 24, then you are now using the variable frame rate feature and under cranking. In which case you will not get any audio recorded. When the frame rate in the scene file menu is set to match the record set up menu format, then you will be able to record audio.

And yes you can record audio in the 720/24pn mode as long as the frame rate in the scene file menu is also set to 24.

Thanks for answering.

The no-sound occurs when recording in 720/30pn. The sound bars don't even come on.

The sound bars are active when I switch to 720/24pn.

RE1000: I hope I didn't misunderstand your question. I've been shooting 720p/24pn almost exclusively for the past couple of months and sound is active and ok.

Thanks

Ozduc:

OH! I see!

I feel like an idiot!

I'll check into it right now!

Thank you..... (kissing your feet).

Maybe I should have bought Barry's book.

Yeah, just set your framerate to 'default' to avoid that issue in the future. Then, if you want over/undercranking, you can adjust it off of default to whatever you prefer.

Oops, I left something out. I mean that if you record in 720p/24pn at a variable frame rate (over or under cranking), do you get no sound? (i'm pretty sure you don't)

That's correct. If you are in 720p/24pn and your framerate is set to something other than 24p you won't get sound.

You can do over/undercranking with sound in the non-native modes, but it isn't done in camera, and it is work you have to do in post. But, if for some strange reason you wanted sound with your fast/slow motion to be recorded, you can do it that way.

Later,
Jason

Jason, Ozduc and all:

I matched the scene file to the frame rate and all is well!

Thank you all!

Due to the space limitations of my 4gig p2 card, I've stuck with 720/24pn. Believe it or not, I've not tried other framerates. A DVX owning buddy of mine still won't believe I didn't experiment with other rates... especially the slo-mo.

Recently, my friend Lisa said my footage of her year old baby was "stroby", so I switched to 720/30pn to cut down on the jerkiness.

Anyways.... I now feel really embarrassed I posted this question... as I'm sure the average HVX user knew all of this....

Jarred, could you kill this thread?

No need to feel embarrassed, there are a lot simpler questions get asked all the time.
One thing you need to be aware of when shooting progressive is camera movement, relative to subject movement. Even in 30p you can still get the "stroby" look if you're not careful, although it can be more pronounced in 24p. The genaral idea is to keep camera movement smooth and if the subject is moving to keep the same framing during their move. The background may then seem stroby or blurry but your moving subject will be the focus of attention so it wont be so noticable. If you are just doing a pan across a room or the back yard then you need to keep it smooth and slow. There is a chart in Barry's book that details the time needed for certain camera moves when working with 24p. It's well worth the read.
Also no need to kill the thread as it may help others.

Problem with shooting 1.7 year old babies is that they are all over the place... running, waving arms etc., and the only way to keep them in frame is to hand hold and track them. The only time when the picture looks good is when they slow down.

The video was shot at the "magic hour" just before sunset, (the hvx200 colors looked great!) but the excessive baby activities wasn't conducive to sharp pics. I suppose I could crank up the shutter speed to combat blurriness, but I was afraid that would just add to the "strobyness".

Ordinarily I am a big fan of using tripods and carefully composing a shot, and avoid panning or camera movements as much as possible.

Thanks for helping me out.

Now I'll have to order Barry's book....
