TV as External Monitor?

I hooked up my little 13" television with a composite (yellow RCA cable) to S-Video adapter to an S-Video cable leading straight into my video card. I'd like to be able to view my footage on the television so I can see how my colors will look when I render for DVD. However, under the Preview on External Monitor settings, I can't find any way to make this work. I'm probably going about this the wrong way but I would really appreciate some insight. That adapter was expensive!

will the audio work this way as well...in conjuction with the video thru the tv's speakers?

No you can do it, I did I had two crt's and one lcd and then my 17 inch flat screen tv hooked up(not flat panel still a tube), You have to make sure you cna hook up anouther thing as a monitor(video out or svideo out) then right click on your desktop proprties and set the tv as an external monitor, then in vegas look for monitor 3 or 4 or whatever number it is.

Sound would only work if you had a sound card with output to your tv's audio inputs/stereo system.

You can do it if you have more than one video card, or a card which is specifically designed to do it -- but most cards aren't.

Well, I got the tv to show me the picture from Vegas, but I can't see the whole picture because I shot in 16x9 and my tv is 4:3. Any thoughts?

Not sure what you mean. What are you seeing?

Wouldn't he see the widescreen bars on his TV?

Under Preferences>Preview device, there are settings for NTSC DV and NTSC Widescreen. Maybe he should choose the NTSC widescreen?

Either way, I don't see any black bars. I see what I'm editing, but it's just coming out kind of squeezed either way. I have my camera set to the VCR position. I tried setting it to EXT. CONN. but that just showed me what was in front of the camera, not what I was editing.

Could it have something to do with the fact that I'm shooting 1080 in 16x9?

Probably, since your TV is NTSC. Maybe the fact that you are trying to preview high def footage on a non high def TV is doing it. That would make sense.

Sounds like Vegas is trying to send that higher sized frame to your camera, and your camera doesn't know what to do with it, so squeezes it into 720x480.

Well, I really wish there were a way to get the bars on there, but I guess I can deal with it for now. I just want the TV to check my color correction anyway, so there it is. Thanks for the input.

Go into your Preview Device options.

Make sure your project format conforms to NTSC DV (should be default).

Check "Recompress edited frames." Applying color correction should get the video to be letterboxed.
