Best looking Digital Film Out So Far From Hollywood?

There's two shots in Episode I that were shot digitally, apparently. Episode II, however, was shot entirely on HD. I could be wrong, but I think I read somewhere at the time it came out, that it was the first feature to be shot entirely on HD.

It was trying to be, but David Mullen shot Jackpot on the F900 and it got in theaters before Episode II did, so I think it actually qualifies as the first 24P HD-only feature...

KMR, Crank looked like it was shot on my mom's holiday camcorder! Well, not quiet that bad... I did think the video look suited the movies premise though, was well done.

Did you see CRANK in a theater, or on DVD? I only saw it on DVD, and the image (at least on the 40" Sony Bravia LCD) was better than any other DVD I have seen, and equal to a lot of HD broadcasts I have seen (over the Dish network).

*IF* you happened to see it in the theater, and that's what your opinion is based on, I wonder if the filmout was not very good, but the DVD was taken from a source that bypassed the digital-film-digital route?

300 was shot on film.

zodiac looked the best to me and with finicher behind it with his cast it was a great film no one saw.

Every movie ever shot with the Genesis looks great. Zodiac and Superman Returns were amazing. My votes for the 2 best.

zodiac was the first film to shoot just with the viper at 2k ... it was not the 3k genesis.

Lets not forget that pretty much every wide release at this point is going through
a digital intermediate process. Principal photography related issues are really the
only tell-tale.

yeah, not being able to tell whether or not it's film, and whether or not it "looks good" are totrally different things.

i think its time to stop comparing film and video and judge them on there own merits. Some video looks bad, but a lot of film looks bad too. Just like how when fincher shoots film, it looks great, and guess what, when he shoots video it looks amazing too! :)

Same thing with Viper vs Genesis. You can't say one camera is better by comparing movies these days. Both Superman and Zodiac look FANTASTIC! It's all about the people BEHIND the camera.

If I HAD to choose one to shoot something with, I'd probably go with the Viper, because of it's small size (the genesis is a behemoth) and it's tapeless workflow.

But why wouldn't I just wait a few months and shoot with RED? ;)

It's mildly irrelevant, but I just had to yammer about the mo-cap stage on a particular Hollywood digital movie happening right now...OMFG it looks like Mission Control in there; several dozen workstations, three hugeaceous viewing monitors, the director moving around with the finder/tracker/capture scope, and on the monitors the real-time character overlays reacting in real time to the performers' movements inside the real time high-resolution digital environment. While everyone balances and picks their way over rickety plywood platforms, with key spot markings.

Fortunately there's an observation gallery; floor-to-ceiling canted glass overlooking the whole shebang.

Future of film making, folks.
