10 most wanted DIY parts for independent filmmakers

Why would any of these monitors be any good for production video? You can only operate them with good quality from a computer. No component or S-Video input.

We use a $7K panny with IRE built-in... sure you could just get that and get exactly what you want.

Or if you're on a budget and want something tweakable for production... i.e. under/overscan and color adjustment... you could spend $4.99 at RadioShack and get a BNC to RCA adapter.

Personally I'd just spend the $7K... and you should too... but if somebody else wants to go $599 + $4.99 I wouldn't blame them.

The monitor seems rel. low res or did I google the wrong specs?

Anyhow, maybe since one of us is in china, CoolLights could contact the manufacturers of the Liliput 7"/8" TFT (they were brought up here several times...) and convince them to add an component-in (as a HVX guy I don´t need HD-SDI...)
The panel should be around the resolution of the Marshall, but han´t got the inputs and adjustabilty of course...
But they sell it at around 180$, even if the component in bumbs up the price to around 500-600$ this would be a smasher!
I just can´t accept that I have to cash out 1500€ to properly focus with my 5500€ camera (though you get used to the focus assist after a while...)
Me and others wrote them mails, addressing the subject, but at least I never got any response...
I know that this probably isn´t what this thread is about, but I guess many would be thankfull for a solution here!

Yes, maybe that's what I would like to add to that most wanted list: a high quality, affordable, DC powered, LCD portable monitor.

Nothing against the BNC connector, as long as I have three of them for a real component input! Or an S-video input, as long as it's really an Y/C input where you can have a higher quality image than on a composite.

Talking in China to the Lilliput manufacturers or similar one might get us there.

Matt your idea sounds great. Let me see what I can get done....

Oh, havent had time to work on the mic shock mounts since the baby but I will start back on it soon!

We're not counting anything out at this point! Even if it seems outlandish. I would love a great, small HD monitor too. Consider it on the list.

sorry Cool Lights... I just wanted to answer the question...

Back to DIY parts.
Actually, I'm for all this discussion. You never know what might come of it. This might end up being the longest thread ever but we might also discover some things. It's true I said this was for DIY parts but I wouldn't rule out finding a great monitor here either. There are several huge monitor makers here in Shenzhen. Someone should detail what they want perhaps. I'm betting though its tough to get something more than 720p right now though in a small one. And the inputs will be the problem in most cases. They still think composite is adequate for a 720p monitor. I think maybe Richard "cool lights" Andrewski needs to set them straight though.

Sorry about my monitor suggestion in the JVC guys... I'm probably in the minority here in shooting with a DVX instead of HD.

I didn't realize that you could even FIND an HD monitor from anybody for under $2K...

The res on the JVCs listed is 1280x1024... so no 1080i or 1080p... but 720p is no problem. I didn't say that was a perfect solution... just that those monitors are cheap for the included features and almost fully adjustable picture.

The monitors that we use on pro shoots are litterally 10 TIMES that price... and while the res isn't up to HD... and there's no IRE display... I still thought that what you're getting for the price (in a 17" or 15" monitor) seems dirt cheap... is there anything within $1500 of that which does what you want in a screen that size?

I'm already checking out the lilliput... but please let me know if I'm missing something.

That resolution would shine if we had some way to use it.

I believe JVC may not add HD capable inputs on those units, like component, because then people wouldn't buy their more expensive models.

But you can find DC (24v) portable screens from Mac that have component inputs. They are large and heavy though.

For your application, even an SD signal from the DVX might look better through an S-Video input, which I can't quite see why the JVC don't carry it.

There's the Benq 24"; has HDMI, S-VIDEO, Component, with reso up to 1080p for about $700:

Perhaps we should open a separate thread for monitor questions.

If anyone wants to, I did a research some time ago on PC monitors, arranged later as doc file, where I marked out several important features. I can put it somewhere for all to see.

The Benq is certainly a good model, but only useful at home. It has no DC power input, so you will AC or a DC/AC supply on location.

Yes, Carlos, I think that would be VERY helpful; a new thread with your doc file.

Re: the benq: exactly, it's also not very lightweight.
But for 1:1 pixel mapping (with the latest firmware) at full 1080p for $700.00 and decent color it [almost] can't be beat currently.

I was thinking of getting the Liliput when we had the XL2, but went for the Marshall WITHOUT HD input back than (yes, a mistake...)
For the DVX the Liliput sems like a good deal...
Richard,
yeah please ask Liliput to do a component-in for their highres model, if they stay below 600$ it even wouldn´t have to have the pro features of the Marshall, it would be just what most HVX users had expected from the HVX´s build-in LCD...
And please don´t forget to ask for an image flip option for adapter users!

Why the HVX? I don't have that camera or planning on getting one... not until 8Gb P2 cards cost $100. That is probably in 10 years or so ;).

Anyway, I would like to place the thread where most people go.

I have a thread already open that deals specifically with monitors meant for studio/field use. Although the initial focus of the thread wasn't high-res, inexpensive LCD displays, they certainly came up in discussion. We can hi-jack that thread if anybody wants to, or we can open a new one.

It's alright for me: an "used" thread or a new one.

Now someone tell me how I upload a doc file there...

Well,
maybe it isn´t DIY, but we could call it "inexpensive monitoring solutions" or simply "low budget monitoring"...
And are we talking on-camera monitors or big screens here...?

Nothing against that!...

Now again: how do I upload the file to the thread?
