Where are the good horror sounds

We're making a short horror film and I was wondering if any of you know where to get a good horror sound effect cd. I heard about evil effects and the errie cd.

can some one led me in the correct direction

Make `em yourself. The problem with genre-specific effects libraries is that they rely overmuch on tired audio cliches. By crafting your own effects, you can build an accoustic pallete that complements the suspense (or violence, or atmosphere, or queasiness) of your film, rather than falling back on a set of general-purpose "scarry sound effects."

Want a gruesome stabbing sound? Tear apart a roasting chicken with a soup spoon. Breaking bones? Wrap some dry rigatonni in a damp chamois and crush it. If you need some gross, slimey, slithery movement, soak heavy paper towels in water and mustard and go to town.

For less literal sound design, a little creativity goes a long way. Broken (or breaking) musical instruments can be rich source of dissonant hits and stingers. Another favourite of mine are the spinning wire racks found in book stores. Take off all the paper-backs, and you've got yourself an almost nails-on-chalkboard metallic screach. For that matter, scratching 5" iron nails across a sheet of slate is sure to put any audience on edge.

Like it - great ideas SMuir.

Are there any good books or dvds folks rate on "foley artists"

It would be great to have a top 100 DIY menu of ways to achieve the most commonly used sound effects and maybe address mike type and placement too..

A couple that stick in my mind are punching melons for punching sound fx (fight club) or scrunching sugar bags for footsteps in snow etc

:)

Terry Burke and Andy Malcolm made a fun little short film called Trackstars, which is a great introduction to foley: http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid=8464716766325610185&q=foley+sound

Of course, we almost never try to cover everything in one take (live performances being the exception).

I'm actually helping Andy out with the recording side of the foley workshops he's teaching over at the Harris Institute. I've started putting together a tutorial handout for the class that will cover the technical side of foley sessions. Once I put together a draft, I'll post it here.

Perhaps we should start up an ongoing thread for foley prop suggestions.

that film was very fun and I think any informatoinm about recreating sound effects would be a totally great resource.

Incidentally I work with a UK music store and we wanted to do a competition for sound effects - so we could run a fun little competition if folks were interested? I could get some mics or audio stuff in as a prize if this is of interest.

Definitely agree with SMuir about making your own sounds. I've used famous stock sounds in some horror film sI've made, for stylistic purposes, but for actual effectiveness, making your own sounds would be a lot better. I made a zombie film with a scene, much like in many zombies movies, where a bunch of zombies feast on a character, ripping out his guts, biting his neck, etc. I made my own disgusting feasting sounsd, and surprisingly got a lot of compliments on it. A lot of people said the sound is what really put it over the top and sold the effects more. One person told me the sounds made them gag a little. I don't think I would have been able to achieve that level of effectiveness if I had used stock sounds.

Sounds like fun. What sort of effects would you be looking for?

Would LOVE to see all this. Great ideas !!!! Just to mention, Foley can also be some of the most fun you can have with a mic . . . .

Perhaps we could start with a Foley stickie as an initial container for this stuff ????
