The Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires
St. Valentines Day Massacre
Jesus Christ Superstar

And we gotta get some Jules Dassin on this list:
Brute Force

Unforgiven
A fistful of dollars
(which leads me to a great sequel title: ) For a few dollars more
(which leads to the title mentioned here a few times already: ) The Good The Bad and the Ugly
(man, that was a good trilogy of names.... and movies)
Death Proof
(i'll ditto on: ) Bring me the head of alfredo garcia
Black Snake Moan (i just can't say this one enough.... it's fun to say!)

that's just a few off the top of my head....

edit: my colon to parenthesis turned to happy faces..... i didn't want that :(

In addtion to all the ones that have gone before, I like the TITLES of the following movies...(in a couple of cases, the movie was worthless, but the title was good...) Other than a couple of examples, they were also good movies.

2 Days in the Valley
Angel Heart
Bad Santa
Big Trouble in Little China
Blood Simple
Body Heat
Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid
The Hand That Rocks the Cradle
Heartworn Highways
Kalifornia
King Rat
The Last Picture Show
The Last Seduction
Legally Blonde
Lethal Weapon
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
The Man Who Would Be King
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
Night Train to Terror
Point Blank
Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom
Primal Fear
Silence of the Lambs
Silent Night, Bloody Night
Something Wicked This Way Comes

Now here's the question: Is there a common thread behind these titles? What in a title makes it good? The only trend I see is the word "dead" in a lot of them. So... there you go! Put "dead" in your title and you have a winner.

Blaine, good call on "Midnight In The Garden of Good And Evil". I loved that title. Didn't really like the movie though.

Here's food for thought. Take EVERYTHING you know about Star Wars away (impossible - but try). Now think of that title. "Star ----- Wars". I think it's a pretty bad title.

And it gets even worse when you turn it into: "Star Wars: Episode 2: Attack of the Clones"!

As for great titles (not necessarily movies), here are a few of my favourites:

The Long Kiss Goodnight (love this one, shame the movie is AWFUL)
American History X
Gone with the Wind
Scarface
Empire of the Sun
Citizen Kane
The Professional
Children of Men
La Femme Nikita

Some more:

Scary Movie

Date Movie

Epic Movie

You guys want something more creative than that? :)

For the Top 10 worst titles:

1- Dude, Where's my car?

2- The Assassination of Jesse James by (blah blah blah)

3- Kindergarden Cop

4- Jason does Manhattan (Ok, original was Friday the 13th vii or something)

5- "Stop, or my mom will shoot!"

I would say to have a killer title, it has to just jump at you and be different, like My Stepmother Is having an afair with Satan that's just an example, that way you're guaranteed a whole lot of people seeing your film at first, but good titles with bad movies never last, but good titles with a good movie is a deadly combination.

Lucas himself even said, Star Wars was the most simplest Title, and like Blaine said if you take away all we know about it, it's just another simple Title, but the movie itself was great enough to stand out on its own.

Great thread!

It's funny looking at the link between good/bad titles and good/bad movies. I always thought (and said) the same thing about Star Wars... it IS a stupid title... amazingly so... and yeah, it just means something else at this point.

"My Life as a Dog"... already posted, but that movie made a strong impression on me... I think I'm that same kid... minus the exciting encounter with the older lady... although I would have tried the same stunt. This title tells you zero about the actual movie, but then it makes perfect sense after seeing it.

I like titles that sound cool, but don't reveal anything...

As already posted... "Jaws" says it all, but "Fight Club" says too much, and the full sentence titles remove my desire to even see the flick.

Bladerunner... that sort of title peaks my curiousity without telling me anything I don't want to know in advance.

Ooooh. I think I just remembered my ABSOLUTE favorite (meaning I wish I'd made it up). The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

Pretty much any move with 'City' or 'City of' in it peaks my interest:

City of God
City of Industry
Dark City
Sin City
etc.

Also titles that seem out of the ordinary like:

Children of Men
The Three Burial of Melquidas Estrada
They shoot horses don't they
The Adventures of Baron Munchuesen
Flight of the Navigator
The Assination fo Jessie James

There are a bunch of others that escape my mind. Movies I normally would not have watched if not for the interesting title.
