For a Docu HD 1280x720 NLE in Vegas, better to shoot with 720p or 1080i ?

Hi im making a docu which is going to finally be rendered out to 1280x720p to match my projector settings. Im going to edit in vegas. PI have to options to shoot either in a HDV JVC 720 progressive cam or the Sony Z1 hdv 1080i. Which will be a better format to shoot in ? Which will give me better clarity when finally output ? Is it wiser to shoot at the same pixel resolution that the final output will be ? Or will it be beter to shoot 1080i and work in a progressive timeline and use pan and crop to frame the subject thoughout the movie moving within the larger resolution frame ?

Your decision should be much more influenced but the cameras (as they are wildly different) and not Vegas as much, as I believe it can handle each format without a problem.

Right. It's a stylistic choice. If you want a film-like look, go with the JVC. If you want a video look, go with the Z1.

I need a film like look. But is there an advantage to having more resolution on the footage ? 1080i ? Im not asking about vegas compatibility. But final render is to 1280x720p. So which is a better option to shoot in that would be easier on Vegas and yield a good render result. Like people say its always better to work on a higher res orginal and then downsize rather than same or lower resolution footage than the final render.

I have a second important question. The final render is going to be 1280x720p. Should my project settings match the final render resolution or is it better to match it to the working footage and then simply render to whatever size needed.

If you want a film look, then you're going to have convert the 1080 footage to 24p or at least to progressive, and you'll torch half your vertical resolution -- thereby negating pretty much all of the benefit of zooming/reframing, etc.. You'll end up with less vertical resolution than the JVC's 720p.
