Those companies which you pay to shoot the movie for you w/ their own equip.+crew??

Not sure if any of you are familiar with what I'm talking about. But there's actually more than one place like this, it's DV-based studio/company which offer their services for you whether it involves making a short or a low budget feature. They have a variety of DV cams, you pick which you want them to film on, they have all the equipment, NLE programs, and a crew to operate all of this. Yes, you have to pay for it, of course. You also have to pay for a script critique/budget breakdown of your project beforehand with them.

I can't remember the name or website for this particular company, something along the lines of DVstudio.com or dvxstudio.com something with DV in the title, but they seem to be pretty legit though. And this definitely sounds like a dream for beginners like myself, since it saves the hassle of which equipment to get, hiring crew, etc. However, I would like to know if anyone has had any experience with places like this? If so, good or bad?

Sounds like it would be uber expensive. If you find the link, definitely let us know what it is.

Production companies have always offered this type of service. Clients come to us with their idea for a commercial, or an infomercial, or a corporate film. We supply the gear, the crew, the talent and expertise to make their vision a reality.

So to offer it on a feature-film basis? Sure, it could be done and done quite legitimately. Don't know anything about those particular companies though.

Never really thought about it, but thats exactly what I do at work! But its all corporate stuff and seems to be the norm so yeah like Barry said it could be pretty legit.

you are describing a production company. There are those out there who only want to write one check for the whole shebang, and they can do it. The first short I directed was kind of like this, except I paid for the editor directly. Besides that, I wrote one check and crew, cameras, equipment, and lights showed up.

Wouldn't do it that way again, it was too expensive. Plus I own most of my own gear now.

holy crap skywalker, you guys have FREAKIN SWEET prices. Are you guys going to be renting the Red cam when it's out? If so... got a round-about rate?

What you describe is exactly what most production companies do. In my experience, all production co's are a little different (some only do commercials, or music videos... some have their own directors, etc.)

Ours is somewhere in the middle. We do all sorts of work and have teamed up with other creatives to produce shows, even though we are also obviously directors and writers ourselves. In fact, probably the more unique aspect of our company is that we are very often hired as writers first, and then producers afterwards.

In general, we are leaning away from simply producing the work of other directors, unless they can prove that they have significant experience and talent... or unless they actually have the cash to front a real production that's at all profitable to us.

We actually do the same thing for the local music scene in the Maryland, DC, Virginia, and Delaware area. It can definetely pay the bills. I thought most dvxusers offered this type of sevice.

That's exactly what we do exclusively for reality and documentary. Not that we don't want to grow up and do features someday.

:)

We're actually at the point now where we're co-developing programming directly with people who have a unique situation or are in another way "relevant" for television. They almost never have experience in intellectual properties, development, aspects of production and sales.

Anyway, that's our little niche and we like it.
