AVCHD and FCP Studio 2

I don't see it anywhere in the tech specs, maybe someone else has seen it. Is the new FCP suite able to edit the AVCHD codec?

I'm surprised no one except Vegas is supporting this yet. Or is this part of the new Pro 422 codec Apple introduced? Anyway, if it's not, how are people going to edit with these AVCHD cameras?

So far this has not been announced. The AVCHD codec is not a Professional Codec yet, since so far only consumer cameras use it, so the ProRes 422 would not be unless you chose to convert the native file into it.

The Codec will likely be implimented into the next iMovie since it is a consumer Codec so far, and that likely will be at Macworld Next January at the latest (of course this is just my guessing). Final Cut could very well have a minor downloadable update to fix this.

ProRes 422 looks really sweet, AVCHD, unless it is the intra-frame iteration is a long GOP codec, you don't want to edit in that anyway. It's not bad for aquisition (and can be very sweet), SUPER SWEET for delivery, but not for editing.

Some people do use it, but I don't think it's a good idea.

I thought according to all of the babble on the forums that AVCHD was supposed to be the HDV killer, since it has a better compression and looks better in the end. HDV is a long GOP too as well so it befuddles me why hardly anyone is supporting the editing of it right now.

I want to recommend these cameras to clients for their portability with great footage capability, but I can't because of the editing of AVCHD. It does not make sense that Apple is not supporting it yet seeing as they were part of the committee in creating it (it's based on their H.264 codec).

Panasonic did just release the HPX500 which uses a AVCHD varient at 100 and 50 MPS. So maybe Apple will work it in sooner than we think.

The HPX500 doesn't support AVC at all, it's DV/DVCPRO/DVCPRO50 and DVCPRO-HD. Their bigger cams have an option to use AVC-Intra, but not AVC-HD.

No worthy AVC-HD cams have been announced yet, just tiny little pocket-cams. But EDIUS has some support for the format; they have a utility that converts AVC-HD files into EDIUS' CanopusHQ codec.

AVC-Intra's not out yet, but Apple's exhibiting in the Panasonic booth and I think they're showing AVC-I support. I know that's what EDIUS was showing, and they were two computers to the right of Apple, but I didn't go look at the Apple so I'm not sure.
