How many "PAL" folks have played "NTSC" DVDS in your PAL Players?

What I want to know is how many of you PAL folks have played NTSC DVD's in your PAL DVD Players, and what was the result?

I am particularly interested in folks who have played region free DVD's. Maybe a Barry and David Bootcamp DVD, or another members film that you ordered, etc.

What is the success rate for you playing NTSC DVD's?
What is the outcome? Is there any noticeable variation to the picture, or playback quality, etc, etc? Does it play absolutely fine, or do you notice any kind of strobing, anomalies, etc.?

Thanks for your help.
Jason

I have played PAL DVDs in my NTSC DVD player without any problems, but never tried the other way (don't have a PAL player).

I've played a couple NTSC in PAL players but I'm not sure if they were region free. But they image was black & white and 1/3 of the scanlines from the bottom were black. You couldn't see the whole frame and there was extensive flickering, don't no though if some of the effects were from the TBC.

I have a similar question: I live in a PAL country (Italy) and I wonder how plays a PAL DVD in an NTSC country. Are there some problems? I'm going to produce a dvd and I would like to know if I have to do it also in NTSC for the foreing people from asia and USA. I hope no of course...

To answer the first question I play NTSC dvd in all my PAL players without problem.

Thanks!
Alex

I've also never had problems playing NTSC dvds on my PAL player. It works just like any PAL dvd only the TV adds black bars at the top/bottom due to the difference in resolution of NTSC. Barry's DVD also plays fine.

Alex,
From what I understand *most* Pal DVD players will play NTSC dvd's. This does not generally work the other way around, though. PAL DVD's dont' generally work on NTSC DVD players, from what I have read. THey would work in a computer DVD player though.

THanks for the responses so far, guys.

Jason

I've heard that Jason, but as I mentioned above I have played a couple PAL DVDs in my NTSC players (two NTSC DVD players, my XBOX, and two PC drives).

shouldn't be a problem with newer players. they have converters. DVDs are not really NTSC or PAL but somewhere in between

DVDs are most certainly NTSC or PAL.

The question is only if the players support multi-standard playback.

Most DVD players here in Europe can play NTSC DVDs.
In most cases, they convert NTSC to PAL internally and output a PAL video signal (i.e. they would not work with a NTSC only display).
Also, 80% of the DVD players sold in EU are region free or can be easily unlocked.

never had aproblem as long as my dvd player is region free. Sometimes they give you the code to crack the DVD to mutli region. I had my phlipps dvd crack when i went back to australia last summer.

What's the polls?

What's the polls?

Yes, my problem is exactly this: how many NTSC DVD players can read PAL dvds without problems? In your opinion is only a small pencent of players that cannot play pal dvds?

Thank you to all.

Alex,
Larry seems to be an exception, but from what I have read:

Most NTSC DVD players CANNOT play PAL DVD's.

Most PAL DVD players CAN play NTSC DVD's. I dont' know how well they do it, though. That's what I'm trying to figure out :)

I've played the dvd that comes with Barry's book (dvx) & the steadicam merlin dvd in my pal dvd player - they play alright although I don't think the quality is as good picture wise as the dvds I make after rendering from pal dvx footage. This is probably an obvious thing to do with ntsc being converted, but particularly with Barry's dvd the image looks quite soft & a little wishywashy
my dvd player is no great shakes though & watch it through a standard consumer crt but that's how it looks to me. hope that helps
