Music for movie production

I'll try to keep my question simple. What is the general rule in regards to the genere of music you use. For example if your going to use hip hop music, you'll also use r-n-b to change it up a little. But you wouldn't go all the way to the other spectrum and use opera music. I guess what I'm asking is should the music you use have the same theme/genere throughout the whole movie.

I know it's okay to break rules, but after you learn them. Thank you

generally, one expects a cohesion between the music and the film -- a unity of form and content. in many cases, that calls for commonalities amongst the cues. but it depends on the picture you're making. in many cases, a disharmony is appropriate. I'm overseeing post on a feature right now about an woman who picks up records at the library, making her choices based on the jacket artwork. so the soundtrack is full of wildly different and unique music cues. still, that ecclectic mix has a certain unity with the content of the story, so it works.
