Jackie Brown is my fave by the way.

Finally, I find someone other than me who actually prefers Jackie Brown.

I mean, Pulp is his masterpiece, but JB was QT at his finest.

QT's influence on the industry is far reaching. He certaibly did not start the whole pop culture vulgarity filled dialogue (QT rode the coattails of Elmore Leonard, David Mamet and Jerry Seinfeld on this one), but he did make it popular.

He practically reinvented the modern crime picture. Everyone seems to still be trying to catch up with him.

I'm glad to know I'm not alone on that boat either. I love Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, etc, but I think most people prefer Pulp Fiction because it's more wow-worthy, I guess. I think most people go into Jackie Brown expecting it to be Pulp Fiction 2, and are disappointed. And although it's stylized, and very noticeably Tarantino, it's a much more mature work, and I think it shows too.

I actually LOVED From Dusk 'till Dawn. That is until everyone started turning into vampires. Then it was like..."wha-haaat".

Reservoir Dogs is my favorite Tarantino film. It was fresh at the time and a LOT different than the other indie stuff out in the early-mid 90's. Pulp Fiction was more entertaining per se, but as a filmmaker, RD was awesome.

I think Tarantino H-A-D influence, especially among young, indie filmmakers at the time. I don't think he has much mojo anymore, ALTHOUGH I'm sure there would be plenty of people lined up to give him money if he'd make another one of his own films.

Interesting dialoge about this subject from one of my fav movies:

35 INT. "SWINGERS DINER" - BEVERLY BLVD. - LATER THAT NIGHT 35

MIKE, TRENT, SUE, CHARLES, and ROB sit around the round
scotch-plaid corner booth of the retro-hip coffee shop. All
of our boys, with the exception of Rob, are classily dressed.
They wear a lot of black, brown, and gray with a splash of
gold and maroon.

The CAMERA REVOLVES around the table in a repeating
"Reservoir Dogs" style over the shoulder 360 DEGREE PAN.

TRENT
... No, baby. I got a better one. You
gotta admit the steadycam shot in
"Goodfellas" was the money...

ROB
... through the basement of that
restaurant...

MIKE
... the Copa, in New York...

TRENT
... through the kitchen...

CHARLES
... I heard it took four days to light
for that shot...

ROB
... Four days..?

SUE
... I don't know about four days...

CHARLES
... That's what I heard...

MIKE
... Maybe. I mean you gotta hide all the
lights...

TRENT
... It looked money.

SUE
... Not as money as the shot from
Reservoir Dogs...

ROB
... Which one?

SUE
... In the beginning. When they're
walking in slow motion...

MIKE
... How can you compare them? Tarantino
totally bites everything from Scorsese...

SUE
... He's derivative...

TRENT
... You gotta admit, it looked money...

CHARLES
.... I heard they made that whole movie
for ten grand...

ROB
... What's the big deal? Everyone steals
from everyone.

I love QT's work, but I don't know if would really consider him a major influence, like say a Hitchcock, Coppola, or a Kubrick

for newer generations yes he is an influence... I know some filmmaker young one who wont watch movies past the 80's...

becuase he stated the first half of the film is all him and his writing .... it real dark and malicious... then the other half is Robert R.. so it becomes campy and cheap and just stupid.

I think his biggest contribution is the proliferation of gratuitous graphic violence in 'mainstream' Hollywood films. Sure it's always been around but it seems it's everywhere since the success of Pulp Fiction. Resevoir Dogs was very controvesial for it's use of graphic violence. Today it wouldn't even raise an eyebrow.

Tarantino's characters have never had distinct voices. They've always sounded exactly the same, and they've always spoke with one voice. His.
I agree 100%. I feel almost embarrassed for QT during some of his scenes (for example, every scene with dialog in Death Proof). He has a gift for dialog, I'm sure, and a good actor can make it shine, but it becomes tiresome very quickly when you begin to recognize that they are all just QT babbling through a 2 dimentional character.

DESPITE that, I still think he is ONE of the best filmmakers of our time. I don't understand the praise for Jackie B. I thought that was just boring and contrived. (I'll have to give it another chance). QT is best when he's paying homage as in Kill Bill(s) IMHO.
