Post Audio Help: LAV Woes-- Final Cut Pro and Soundtrack

Earlier in our shooting day (HVX200 720p24pN) we used a crappy LAV that had a lot of static going on. I couldn't go back to get the audio or that shot again, so now I'm stuck with trying to fix the four channels of audio in post.

It's voice, and there's a thin layer of static that I can't seem to push away.

I also have room sound, the same voice, but it doesn't sound as good. Is there anyway to sweeten the audio to help it sound like the Mic audio?

I am working in Final Cut Pro and Soundtrack Pro.

Might help to post a clip to give the guru's (not me!) a better idea of what you're dealing with. "thin layer of static" could be many things. Good Luck.

FCP and STP have some noise reduction tools BUT you can't use those tools if you aren't set up for sound!!! I say that loudly because most picture editing rooms are terrible for sound. If you try fixing your sound in a noisy room with cheap speakers your probably going to do more damage than good.

STP has better tools but I would be very hesitant to use it on a long and or complicated film. A short with not too many tracks or a doc is probably OK.

So are you doing the post sound? If not let whoever is fix the tracks, they will have better tools and know how to use them (I would hope).
If your a one man band, then I would edit with maybe a little filter or something that you can remove later (just to keep you from going crazy). Then when the picture edit is done pull in the offending clips into STP get your room quiet and borrow some decent speakers, or you could use headphones. You should NOT mix with head phones but dialog editors frequently edit on headphones.
Don't try to remove everything in one pass. And the big question after you change something is "is it better, or just different?"

Static however is probably going to be hard to remove. Room tone not so hard.

I'll remove the noise (won't be free but it won't kill ya either). How long in run time is it? Oh yeah, make an MP3, zip it up, and attach it here.

Did I misunderstand or are you suggesting that you will decode his MP3 denoise it and re-encode it and send it back?

Probably not, because that would really bad things to the sound quality.

You did misunderstand, as I need to hear it before I can make any suggestion. If and when he's ready, I'll give him a link to my FTP sever, where he can upload large 16/24 bit files (hundreds of megs) if need be, for any actual repair.

I'm glad to hear that. Didn't mean to insult, on these lists you never know, I have heard scarier suggestions.
