HDV & Keying or Spl Fx in Vegas

I was planning to do my new Docu in HDV (sony z1) and work with native HDV for my project. But i read some articles thru google where some people say HDV is a horrible format to work with concerning spl fx and green screening etc due to the heavy compression. Any of you worked with HDV footage within Vegas (green screening, bezier masking). Also they suggest shooting HDV and then downconverting to DV Standard Def and they say the clarity will anyway end up much better on the final result than if we had started with SD shooting. If at all the native HDV format causes a lot of problems then if we opt to downconvert the same footage to plain dv and work on a SD timeline will this solve the problem or will the artifacting remain ?? Are there any workarounds ? Like maybe import and get a hdv resolution normal avi. My final output is going to wmv9 HD or mpeg 2 @ 1280x720 to match the projectors exact resolution. Can any of you help me with your ideas and experience ?

Abother doubt that i have is. A lot of people work with an intermediate file of lower resolution. Then during final render only they replace the files with the originals. This is to facilitate better preview etc fine. But i dont understand one thing. When you work with a lower resolution intermediate, What happens to your pixel accurate bezier masking. Im sure it wont match pixel for pixel when the higher resolution file comes in at render. I hope you understand what i mean.
