Hates to Rent
Just bought a Mole 412 2K recently. Nice light. It has an SPC connector on the end of the cord, as it probably lived in a soundstage.

My question is can I replace it with an edison. The thing draws 16.7 amps, and edison is 15, so that's why I am concerned. Most household circuits are 20 amps, so I may be OK there.

What plugs are on the end of your 2ks?

Thanks!

I've got a Mole 2K with an Edison connector. I rarely use it, it's a massive light. But on occasion I'll bring it out because it's got such a large face that it acts as somewhat of a softlight all on its own. I've used it on dedicated circuits in newer houses and gotten away with it, but it's really pushing the limits. I find that running a 1K bulb in it makes it more practical electrical-wise, but obviously without as much punch.

Thanks Barry.

I just checked mole's site and they do make a 1500 watt globe for it.....that may be the answer.

Thanks for the help!!!

2k lights with edison bulbs -

I own four 2k lights, and all of them have edison plugs on them. The Hollywood standard edison plug is the 15amp Hubbel connector, which is a very high quality 15amp plug. Make sure to tighten the screws extremely tight, and after a few months take the outside shell apart and tighten the internal screws again. Over time, check on them. You'll find that the screws will often come loose over time [I use my lighting package 200+ times a year, I service the plugs once a year, tops].

About power: we run the 2ks on house power all the time using CYX bulbs (2000 watts) - just use a 20 amp circuit and you should be fine.

[BTW - I own 3x 1200 HMI pars, which draw 19.8 amps, and we use that on 20 amp house power all the time. On warm days or sometimes randomly they will shut off or trip the breaker, so the 2k using 16.7 amps is no problem.]

Thanks very much, Tim. Good to know.

I recently replaced the wiring in my 2K mole, and added a new, higher rated (temp wise) cord (12ga) and a new edison plug just to make sure.

I own 8 2k lights from various manufacturers. All of them have 15amp edison hubbles and never had a problem. I also have 5 1200 HMIs all with 15amp edison hubbles.

if you look at all the edison stingers at every rental house in town, they all have 15amp hubbles.

I use my 2k a LOT, but I do a lot of music videos.

what IS important, is that the cable be 12 guage or heavier. You never want to run a 2k or 1200 HMI on lightwieght wire like the cheap orange or yellow stingers you get at home depot that are 14 or 16 guage.
