One thing that you wish you would've gone to film school for?

Funny that this thread resurfaced again. I'm actually pretty active in my own work, which started just after this. I'm happy about it! Still haven't directed my OWN short but that's coming soon.

Working on projects with an actual team that's partially my own r0x me s0x.

Oh and I get my first paid directing job today. =PPPP A three minute commercial/introduction.

Haven't read all 15 pages...

But I wish I would have paid more attention to lighting... always wanted to be above the line and made it... but now that I've moved to a smaller market...

Might just have to learn to become a gaffer, dp, key grip, craft service, makeup/hair and anything else that I've forgotten...

The other two things...

I didn't learn or get the idea of networking when I was in my early 20's...

Also that its a more than just art... its about making money...

Oh after posting... saw it quick about the hot chicks... yeah in my junior college class the hot chick got into USC easier than some with more talent... still trying to learn that lesson... I didn't finish at USC because my father died... ended up working for a while... which in more ways than one helped me in the producing realm on learniing how to run a small food market... than I learned in film school...

But I did go back to film school at the junior college again... learned about networking... still working with four friends... I just can't sucker them into coming back to the midwest to help out for peanuts... actually they will...

I wish I would have done more networking when I was in film school but to be honest, out of everyone in my class that graduated, terribly few are still at it. Most have gone full time into various service industries (bartenders, waitresses, customer service, stocking inventory). When I run into them and they ask w hat I'm doing, I tell them, theyrespond with how interested they are at getting back into it, I give them a card and tell them to call me and they never do.

The one thing I got that you can't teach in school is motivation. When I get gigs and can invite people, I try to include people I know have the passion and talent but may lack the resources, but they tend to fall off the radar. I think I got just about everything I could get out of the film school I went to, but I'd be down to go back to grad school and see what else I can learn.

Check that, I wish I'd paid more attention in critical studies. Several years after I graduated I'm just now starting to dig into the underbelly of films, the psychological and emotional levels, and every time I dig farther, lessons from my critical studies class become clear.
