10 Great Movies You May Not Have Seen

I added a bunch and now my netflix list is approaching 450 (when will I ever watch all of these). :(
On the upside, netflix queues max out at 500. If you do the math it'll only take you about 4 years to watch all of them if you do 10/month.

Newer Stuff:
Love Liza (Todd Louiso)
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (George Clooney)
The Ice Storm (Ang Lee)
Jerry and Tom (Saul Rubinek)
Jesus' Son (Alison Maclean)
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (Shane Black)
Living in Oblivion (Tom Decillo)
Man Bites Dog (Remy Belvaux)
A Simple Plan (Sam Raimi)
State and Main (David Mamet)

Older Stuff:
Days of Wine and Roses (Blake Edwards)
A Face in the Crowd (Elia Kazan)
Mildred Pierce (Michael Curtiz)
Five Easy Pieces (Bob Rafelson)
Lenny (Bob Fosse)
All That Jazz (Bob Fosse)
Man With The Golden Arm (Otto Preminger)
Odd Man Out (Carol Reed)
Fallen Idol (Carol Reed)
Reds (Warren Beatty)

Just a few that I suggest (not as eclectic as some others' lists, though)...

Peeping Tom
Fallen Idol
Thirteen
Jeremiah Johnson
Blow Up
Blow Out
Outland
Caccia alla volpe (After the Fox)
Passion du Joan D'Arc

The Conformist (italian)
Bicycle Thief (italian)
Metropolis (german)
High Tension (french)
The Harder They Come (jamaican)
Near Dark (u.s.)
Delicatessen (french)
Seventh Seal (swedish)
Rashomon (japanese)
The Gunfighter (u.s.)

Nice list, TheMacB.

I'll steal a few and add a few of my own.

Hiroshima, Mon Amour
Man With A Movie Camera
No Man's Land
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind
The Year of Living Dangerously (I'm actually not sure how many people have seen this... maybe everyone has)
Primer
The Iron Giant
The Conversation
Paradise Now
A Boy and His Dog

Films with dogs in the title seem to be popular...

Lawn Dogs (Sam Rockwell has a certain something. Mischa Barton did once too)

Funny Games (like watching a train wreck)

The Piano Teacher (another train wreck!)

Roger Dodger (love the sharp dialogue)

Spanish Prisoner (I'd love to see Campbell Scott in more)

Breaking the Waves (the most emotionally draining film I've seen)

Double Life of Veronique (my favourite soundtrack)

In the Company of Men (spare indie - great dialogue)

At Close Range (Walken and Sean Penn back in the day)

The Tenant Roman Polanski directs and peforms as a hapless apartment dweller manipulated by his creepy conspiring murderous neighbors.

The Good Thief
Nick Nolte-Gambler-Thief-Caper-Noir. Nutsa Kukhianidze is so beautiful, it hurts. Neil Jordan rocks.

Beyond the Valley of the Dolls
Really! This is my happening, and it's freaking me out!

Suburbia Abandoned punk kids surviving in SoCal, funny, scary, and tragic.

Throne of Blood Kurosawa's 'MacBeth.' 'Nuff said.

MacBeth Roman Polanski's, this time.

Kontrol Enjoy the clean, efficient Budapest subway system! Just don't stand too close to the platform edge. From the director of Vacancy.

Dark Star.
Dan O'Bannon and John Carpenter make music, together. And a desperately funny small-budget science-fiction movie, too. Production Design by Ron Cobb.

Street of Crocodiles by the Quay Brothers. Fundamentally indescribable. And totally riveting.

Farewell to the King. Jungle insurgent warfare against the Japanese in 1944 Burma. Nick Nolte as a deserter-turned-king. A great war movie in every sense of the phrase.

UPDATE: Sorry, my list went over 10. If I didn't force myself to stop, I'd still be writing.

I'm partial to thrillers.

Here's my list by title and director:

7 Days in May-John Frankenheimer:::Great film about a general who wants to take over the White House. Screenplay by Rod Serling-creator of the Twilight Zone.

11:14-Greg Marcks:::fantastic film about several people whose lives intersect--we see what they were all doing which led to an event at 11:14. VERY COOL flick.

The Guilty-Anthonty Waller:::Bill Pullman plays a slick attorney who gets accused of rape. He encounters a young thug and hires him to kill his victim...things don't go as planned. Great white-knuckle thriller.

Carlito's Way-Brian DePalma:::I actually prefer this film over Scarface. Great film about an ex-criminal who gets out of jail and tries to go straight, but his past comes back to haunt him.

Running Scared-Wayne Kramer:::I didn't see this film in theaters because of Paul Walker. I'm now kicking myself and recommending this flick to everyone I can. Excellent film about a criminal who has to get rid of a gun that was used to kill a cop, but the gun is stolen by his neighbor's son. A dark, Brother's Grimm-type of fairy tale.

Fulltime Killer- Johnnie To and Wai Ka Fai:::two hitmen with very different personalities become each other's targets.

The Assignment-Christian Duguay::Donald Sutherland plays a CIA agent who is trying to capture a terrorist and uses someone who looks just like him.

Nine Queens-Fabian Bielinsky:::there was an American remake of this Argentinian flick...skip it and watch the original about a day in the life of two con men.

Made Men-Louis Morneau:::James Belushi plays a wiley ex-con who is in the federal witness protection program, who is tracked down by his old associates, whom he happened to have stolen 12 million dollars from.

Safe House-Eric Steven Stahl:::Patrick Stewart plays an ex-CIA agent who is suffering from Alzheimers and is suffering from paranoia...or is he?

Shade- Damien Neiman:::Great film about a magician turned card shark who gets involved with some con men.

Thick As Thieves-Scott Sanders:::Alec Baldwin plays a quirky thief who gets involved in a deadly game of tit for tat with a brash criminal.

Thesis-Alejandro Amenabar:::Great thriller from Spain. A film student becomes obsessed with snuff films.

The Lost City-Andy Garcia:::great film, great music, very much like Casablanca, my only complaint is it was a tad too long, it should'a been trimmed, but a great film regardless.

Nadie Conoce a Nadie-Mateo Gil::From Spain, A cross word puzzle writer gets involved in a deadly game with a terrorist group.

Unknown- Simon Brand:::several men wake up in an abandoned warehouse. there was a skirmish, some are kidnappers, some are kidnapped, all have amnesia-great flick.

Many of the films are pretty recent and folks may have heard of them, but not actually seen them.
