And they said Macs don't crash...

i rarely have problems with my mac i rare cut it off. and even my mini mac is working like a charm....

Well maybe I and everybody else I know who constantly have problems with macs are all just incredibly incompetent. But last time I checked, I'm a pretty intelligent guy and so were the people I know, and if I'm having a problem with the computer, it likely isn't my fault. Apple consistently preaches simplicity so if I'm incompetant enough to operate one of their computers, well then I strongly recommend that anyone who isn't at least a software developer stay away from a mac.

Obviously every computer is different. And the amount of and diversity of programs that you run on your computer strongly affects the number of problems you encounter. All I'm saying is I've had a lot more problems on a mac than I have a PC and if I started in with the number of stories Mac buyers have regaled to me regarding their frustration with a computer they were told was the second coming of Christ, I'd be here all night.

The two advantages I'll give Macintosh is that they look nicer and have a nicer interface. But that's where it ends.

I knew Mac's crashed when I went to college, in fact, that's where I learned the rule of "save as you go" I rarely if ever save as I go now because I never crash. If you want a well balanced PC, keep it far from the internet. PC's are cheap so get yourself a cheap surfing box and a KVM switch ( Handy little device allowing one to run 2 PC's on the same keyboard, mouse and monitor) This method will help your production PC stay stable ALWAYS. It is not the fault of the PC or the Windows OS that every foolish child and hacker wannabe out there is constantly aiming code missiles at it. It is very true IMHO that some people are better with the tools than others, just as some are better drivers in their cars....Nuff said.

KVM switch is a life saver, as it actually operates either way-- Switch between Screens if you want. I love it.

That said, I agree with Mino. If you keep the computer away from malicious websites, you're pretty much safe. I never open mail from unkown users, rarely download anything that I know isn't safe, and I refuse to turn off ZoneAlarm for any purpose what-so-ever.

Are we still on this thread. Cool. I'll dump more spam.

c.g._eads, I think yours and your mate's problems sound like bad hardware. Some just come off the production line as lemons. And you gave them homes. Sorry.

After reading this thread I'm starting to think that the marriage of Apple and Intel may have been a bad idea. Bring back IBM I say. Well, what do I know :)

Regarding speed, a colleague of mine used to say that 90% of sluggishness can be resolved with more memory. These days they are cheap so you could give that a try. Developers are lazy nowadays and tend to use too much memory on their applications. This means that OSs spend most of their time swapping (for those that don't know what this means, it's just when your PC uses part of the hard disk as your memory because it has no physical memory left. The drawback is the time it takes to give you more juice when you ask for it). The tell tale sign is when there's a mega pause after you click for your app to wake up. (A bit like me without coffee)

And back to the crashing. I remember saying earlier that most of the time it's an illegal read/write. Well, the rest it's a hardware problem. Unfortunately a Mac's components are not easily serviced. Unless you want to sell your other child to purchase it. Unlike PC's when the bloke down the road just knows what to do. And no, I won't go there because I'm still not a fan of Windows. I'm 3 hours later to my bedtime tonight because of MS Windows.

However, I agree that Mac's are expensive. (I mean why can't they take a page from Linux.) It's all about our capitalist society. If there's a need for it, then there's a price to for it. And OSX is genius because it combines the robustness of Unix BSD with a killer GUI.

Anyway, good luck c.g._eads. I think you should start with purchasing more Memory - no, not from Apple they'll rob you blind - from the internet. Just make sure you buy the right one. Then again, forget I said that. Just go to the next Apple store (they are easily spotted because they're currently in a battle with lamp posts and pavement to dominate the city) and scream as loud as you can until they give you a replacement or you get thrown out.

Yep, you could do that. Or just save yourself time and money and buy a PC.

Just snagged a dua1.6 ghz , 1 gig ram, nivida 6 series, 16" HD screen HP pavillion laptop for 640 bucks

It runs Vegas, Photoshop, and after effects (all at the same time) without a hiccup

Plus BattleField2 (oh yeah native PC = fun game time)

Also, surprisingly Vista has been problem free - although it angers me that it looks like a mac interface now (waste of ram, just to look "pretty")

When you're growing up on welfare Macs are just way too overpriced for really no reason at all (other than Apple trying to recoup and keep the damn company afloat)

I'm using a mac right now, I think its a G5 or some shizzle, but the thing crashed when I tried to open a music page on imeem, with this explanation:

Uknown Error Occured

Okay...

Not to mention the damn thing is unable to play music videos via yahoo music

ALTHOUGH

It does have some BANGIN speakers, I'm blasting the new timbaland album as we speak (great stuff, although it's been getting criticized fairly harshly)

Oh and it IS verry prettyyyy

my mac plays yahoo files you neeed to get flip for mac installed watch wmv like a charm.

wait. I just used my friend's PC. All I can say is that Macs are overpriced pieces of ****.

But at least they ain't a PC.

Mygod those machines suck.
