which HD screen for home

I am looking for a HD screen for home. 40-42 inches.
I want to watch films of course (Sony Playstation will come into the house soon). Both from BluRay and SONYs mp4 playback (which will be useful to watch my own stuff).
I looked at this and it looks good: http://geizhals.at/Panasonic_TH-42PV60EH_a189113.html

what do you guys have? I watch a lot of sports, so I need a fast display.

is very very niiiiiice. chris like.

But go with Vizio. haven't you heard? they're the tv company of the future!

Just in the offshoot chance that c.g. wasn't kidding, I'd like to caution you against Vizio. They're constantly being returned and many don't even work properly out of the box. Just search some of their TV's on Amazon and read the reviews to see what I'm referring to.

Of course, I'm pretty sure that c.g. was indeed kidding about Vizio...

Yeah...not sure that anyone can recommend a Vizio, or any of the new off brands for that matter. I've heard good things about the Olevia's, but you'd probably be better off to stick with a name brand.

If you're wanting to do Blu-Ray, then you're gonna want a 1080p-native set. I would recommend the Sony Bravia 40" Direct-view LCD. Not sure what the prices are in Eurpoe, but B&H here in the states is now selling them for $1795.

I'd go for higher resolution than 1024x768.

I have (2) of the Olevia's and love them. Great picture for the price. I went through 3 seperate LCD's before I finally got one of them and I love it.

Res is 1366x768.

I've got an older panasonic 42" 1366 x768 plasma that I just love. Sure its not 1080, but to me it looks pretty darn good.

ive got a JVC LCoS display. 56FN97. The slim models just came out, 10" thick Projection based, wall mountable. around 2800 for the 58" version.

Theres plenty of sets around 40" but finding a 1080p Plasma set wont happen at that size, atleast not easily. LCD sets at 1080p will be a tad expensive, projection sets dont usually come in 1080p at that size, youd need 50" minumum, but get the extra size, added resolution and a cheaper price in general going with Projection.

Remember DLP uses wobulation to get the full 1920 x 1080 res, splitting the horizontal dots in half to do double duty. If that matters to you. Also look for HDMI 1080p support, which comes in all new sets, but there are some 1080p sets that dont accept 1080p signals.

I have a 42" Vizio and couldn't be happier. Of course my standards my be lower than most on this board. HD content looks good, DVD thru component looks good...and as mentioned, it's the TV of the future!
Damn, now I have to go check out those Amazon reviews for clarification. Well, if something goes wrong, at least I got it at Costco: home of the very liberal return policy.

maybe the source of all those returns...majority of Vizio's are purchased there because of that reason, and id have to say buyers remorse is the culprit of more returns than anything, Vizio sets are actually pretty decent, and not the companies fault people dont calibrate their sets and blame out of box settings for bad picture.

I will say this: I spent several months looking for an HD set before plunking down my cash. I went to a bunch of different stores. At the end of the day, (figuratively) it came down between the Vizio and the Sony Bravia. Based on the look and price, I settled on the Vizio. Like I said, I'm very happy with the picture. I was watching the Matrix Reloaded DVD yesterday and all the fight & action scenes looked great. No streaking, artifacts, etc.

Side story: The first box I selected actually had a small Olevia TV in it, AND it was WEIGHTED DOWN with parking curb to make the box feel heavier. I took the box home w/o knowing.
After a subsequent mental breakdown on my part, and a Costco "investigation", they swapped me out with the right TV. Turns out someone had suceeded in returning the Vizio box with the smaller set inside. What a scam. I was pissed. I guess the moral of this story is check the box before you leave the store.

Yeah, I wondered about that. This screen is the "plasma of the year" on several magazines over here and used as reference for Plasmas (in that priceleague below 2500). I am wondering how they do 1080p.
All LCDs of 37´´ and higher are 1366px wide at least. How come plasmas look better with lower rez. Most LCDs I looked at had smearing in sports footage. Therefore I want a plasma. And since it is for homeuse I don´t wanna spend over 1700.

yeah I am aware of that. But how does it look? I don´t understand why a Plasma screen like the one I think about buying is a "Reference" with 1024pixels horizontal rez, and LCDs have 1366pixels. In the shop they are all looking similar anyway. Only the Pioneer screens for 4.000+ seem to be even better.

I agree with this statement.
I've been shopping for an HD TV myself, and when I saw the Pioneer plasmas, hands down they had the most pleasing picture. That being said, they were also 1/2 MORE money than the others.

Pioneer's Elite line are, along with Mitsubishi's Diamond series, simply the best HDTVs you can buy at any price.

i was just at Best Buy the other day. I personally thought the Sony had the best picture. But I never trust those pictures. I always feel like it's minimum wage best buy workers calibrating the TVs, and they could easily make a far superior TV look inferior with the inadvertant push of a button.

I believe newer LCDs have caught up with the "ghosting" problem by improving the speed of the flicker rate. Or something like that.

the response time on lcd's across the board have been greatly improved in the last year or so, with around this time last year a good one being around 12ms, now thats cut in half and lower. but remember g/g response time will wiegh in favor of the tv as there still is no standard practice for measuring this across all companies. but ive seen some at 2ms, most around 6ms. shouldnt see ghosting below 8ms, though ive seen sets that had 19ms response times and didnt have any ghosting problems at all.
