Audio capture settings question (FCP)

I shot with a Senn G2 wireless on channel 1 and the built in Mic on channel 2. So- what would be the ideal audio capture mode. I will want to boost and tweak channel 2 as it's how I recorded audio for everyone else who wasn't wearing the lapel mic. I can't make heads or tails of the little icon in FCP log and capture which toggles between O O and ∞. Does one keep the channels separate and one mix the two? There's 3 hours of footage so I want to get it right the first time. Thanks.

I don't have FCP in front of me... but I imagine "O O" is dual mono and "∞" is stereo (linked). However, you needn't worry much, as FCP will not blend audio; you'll still have the two separate tracks from the camera in either case. The only thing FCP does different is default to pannling hard left and right for stereo, center for mono; and linking the volume control. All this can be pretty easily changed if necessary after capture.

You can also link and unlink the two audio tracks in the same manner after you capture. In your case, you want to unlink them for capture. But you can always re-link them at any time in the Timeline window.

When you open the file in the Viewer, if they're linked, you'll have only one Audio tab with a linked stereo pair panned left and right. Volume, Pan, and Filtering will effect both at the same time.

If they're two mono tracks, you'll have two Audio tabs in the Viewer, and you can effect each Volume, Pan, and Filtering seperately.

I have a question regarding Ben's last post, I always shoot the same settings on the dvx and in my last project, i imported the clips into FCP 5.1.4 and the audio is stereo and i can't separate the tracks. I have always had it come in as 2 separate channels (I always use 2 mics in different inputs on the dvx. Does anyone know how i can separate them and what setting may have caused this on the dvx or fcp? Thanks!

The DVX always records 2 audio tracks; and has no clue whether they're stereo or dual mono. Doesn't matter to the DVX.

In FCP's Log and Capture window, under the Capture settings, you can link or unlink the audio tracks to ask FCP to default to treating them as stereo or dual mono. I haven't tried, but it may be possible to deselect one of the audio tracks in this window so as to only import one... make sure both are selected, either linked or unlinked.

If you select a clip with audio in the timeline, FCP's "Modify" menu has an option to treat clips as a stereo pair. You can check or un-check it to change how the audio is treated.
