San Diego based filmmakers: Locations

For any filmmakers in San Diego who are always looking for locations to shoot their movies at, I have started to compile a photographic record of some of the better locations in San Diego. It started when I kept finding great locations, but then I wouldn't write them down and I would forget where they were. So I decided to take photos of the locations and post them to my Flickr Account.

In the Flickr Collection, San Diego Locations for Movies, you will find a range of locations. As of right now, they're based around the Spring Valley, Santee, La Mesa area, but I'll be expanding that soon enough. (This has been only my first day of shooting). The neat thing about the gallery is that each photo is searchable. If you are looking for a location with a "Pink Brick Wall", simply search for that in the set and the photos with pink brick walls in them will pop up. The coolest part however is that each photo is Geo-Tagged. So, once you find a picture of a location you want to use, simply click on the "map" icon to see precisely where the location is on the map. (Satellite, normal view, or Hybrid).

As I said, this is just the beginning of my cataloging. I am shooting downtown San Diego on Thursday, with more locations to follow. I am doing this mainly for my own benefit so i don't really care if anyone replies to this or not, but I figured I should share this with others. Hope it helps someone! Carleton

Me, debating with myself about the usefulness of this particular park location

Recently updated the gallery with location photos of Downtown/ Convention Center area, Seaport Village, Lemon Grove, Imperial Ave, etc. More to come.

This is a nice idea. You should do a mashup with google maps so you can see where the locations are on the map. That would be especially useful for places with low name recognition (eg "Dumpsters behind the 99 cent store").

Thankfuly, they are indeed connected to Google Maps. Flickr has a feature called "Geo-Tagging" which lets you place photos on a map to see where they were taken. I believe it runs off the Google Maps/ Mapquest architecture. All the photos in the mentioned collection have been Geo-Tagged (all 500+).

I have a bunch of pictures of Presido Park and a good amount of Harry Griffith (Spelling?) Park if you would like to add them to your collection.

I've shot all over SD as well, so if you need some location stills just drop me a message.

Jeremy, I'd love to add your pictures to my collection. I'm not sure how to do it though through Flickr. I guess maybe you can upload them and I can download them, then re-upload them to Flickr (though that seems like a TON of unnescecary work). Maybe you can post the links here in this thead for now, since I plan on updating this thread when I add new pictures to the Flickr collection. I found a guy in NY who does the same thing too, it's great how Flickr works like a community.

I think you have to start a group, then you can add other users' sets to the group. I believe that others would have to request permission from you to join the group, so you can still maintain control.

I can see this taking off, since it's such a great resource for people who may be filming out of their own area.

Wow this is a fantastic idea, I'm always forgetting about good locations and then remembering them at the wrong time. A photo catalog of them is brilliant - and the geo-tags make it that much better! A nice way to show clients possible locations quickly too.

A group for San Diego Locations is a great idea!

The Group's url is: http://www.flickr.com/groups/sdlocations/

If you'd like to be invited, just PM me here or via Flickr and I'll add you. Note, only ask to be added if you have pictures to contribute. If you just want to look at the pictures, you do not have to be a member. Looking forward to getting a catalog of pictures going here!

Yes, you might want to turn this into a business. In all my searches for location websites, your simple idea is the most well-done of anything I've seen (by far). If you did this up here in LA, you could make a loooooot of money. I've been trying to find a wide stairway that has at least 50 stairs (so the actors who sit on them are dwarfed throughout the frame by steps) that isn't on a main street (so we get good sound) forever. Haven't found it yet. I keep saying to myself, "if someone just went around here and took pictures of everything and archived them somehow, I wouldn't have to do all this work". Maybe you'd charge a small fee (3 bucks?) to release the location of a particular place (they'd search the pictures, find what they want, you release the location for 3 bucks). Just brainstorming here, and I know people have tried variations of this, but their sites are so awkward and buggy. This is simple.

Best of luck,
Chris

Maybe you should come on down and shoot it at the San Diego Convention Center. ;)

As far as making money off this idea, that'd be great. But short of ripping off Flickr's engine and design, I doubt it'd happen. I'm just hoping that this is a useful reference for San Diego based filmmakers.

Well now that I can location scout without physically going down there, that might actually be possible. Thanks for the location.

There is also this group on flickr that (purportedly) has photos from location scouts. Not nicely grouped like yours are, though.

there is a Zen garden in Encinitas that is pretty awesome. Its got huge koi ponds and during the winter you can see the whales in the ocean. Ill snap some pics and get an address next weekend.
