I'm looking at throwing together a film company at least online with a domain and a splash page. The reason I want to do this is because if I hire or contact actors, I'd like to say I'm a director with "such and such" and have a name brand.

Versus..I'm a guy with a camera who needs actors.

I think it just has a more professional look. Also I could open a business checking account and have checks printed with the film companies name on it.

But my question is..I noticed a lot of people say xyzPictures.com or xyzEntertainment.com, xyzFilms.com, etc. etc. etc.

What is the difference really? And which sounds the best in your opinion for an Independent Film company?

Its alot more than just some checks a website and a name, but to answer your question...

Productions might be better, depending on what comes before it.

For example, you use "studios". Why are you using "studios" instead of productions? :)

There's nothing wrong with being a guy with a camera looking for actors. What's worse is pretending to be something you're not. It'll smell like a rookie pretending to be a big shot, and that'll cost you respect.

I've gotta agree with this.

You could market yourself as a freelance artist/director and that still sounds somewhat pro without being full of B.S.

If all you're planning on doing is making independent films, I'd say go with 'Pictures or Films", whichever you prefer.

If you're going to be doing a variety of things, little short films, graphic design, editing for hire, special effects, ect, I'd say go with 'Studios' or 'Media' or even 'Productions'.

If you're a production company and you're going to be making films, tv commercials, music videos, all kinds of different video/film productions, go with 'Productions'.

What kind of stuff are you going to be doing?

I use the name Raw Image Films for my film stuff but I also co-founded a production company with a larger group of people (using the word 'productions' in the title) in order to make commercials, films, music videos, ect. Different names for different purposes. If you're just looking to build a brand around your name and want to have a website that showcases your work, go with something 'films' or something 'pictures'.

I think Pictures and Film give the idea that you just produce.

Entertainment is good if you run a company like mine where you do other things besides just films (I also produce music).

Studio usually means that you distribute, and might produce.

Keep in mind that if you are going to use this name for official business (checks, contracts, etc) you need to register your company with your state and apply for an ID number from the federal government.
