I am in the market for a DVX100 and I was wondering what is considered "too many hours on the tape heads" I know there are other factors, but if you were considering buying a used DVX100 where would you draw the line.

THanks for your time,

I'd say it's not too many until you're in 4 digits. Over 1,000 you might be looking at needing to change the heads out. But 300, 400, 500? No problem, usually. Might need a head cleaning but should still be good.

It's dificult to answer your question because it all depends on the selling price.

1000hrs is about the midlife point for DVX. However you also need to consider the age of the cam even if the head hrs are low because even if a piece of equipment lies unused, deterioration of some materials still takes place ie; drying out of rubber belts/capstans/pinch rollers and shifting tolerance with age of electrical components.

From memory I think the manual states an MTBF of 2,500 hrs in an ideal environment. But then we'd probably have switched to HD before any of our DVXs hit the 1500hr mark.

Thanks for the info, I have about $1800 to spend right now. There are a couple I am looking at, some at about the 150hr mark.
