Always buy the best computer you can afford to keep obsolescence at bay for as long as possible.
I've bought the low-end Mac offering a few times in my life only to have buyer's remorse creep in three months later when the machine was no longer even being offered for sale.
I do the reverse now. I buy the last generation on clearance, this way I don't feel bad when I buy and then a new supercomputer comes out a month later.
I hear ya, Brody... It's all about preferences - both financial and equipment.
As for me, I'm operating on two old G4 desktops (circa 1999 and 2001) and a G4 Powerbook (circa 2003). Suffice to say, I'm getting a new system this Summer and I want it to grow as long in the tooth as have my current crop. I plan to buy the top desktop offering at the time.
I am definitely going to get the best PC desktop I can at the moment. I can work on a G5 at work when I need Final Cut, etc, and go home to do everything else. And then later this year I'll pick up my own Intel Mac; whether that be a Core 2 Extreme or an Octo/Eight core.
