Importing footage from Canon HV10/20

I'll be getting the new Canon HV 20 soon.

I have a few questions...

Will Premiere Pro 1.5 do? I have the HDV patch.
Should I upgrade to 2.0?
What is the best way to get the footage into PPro in order to edit it?

I want to keep it as "native" as possible.
What settings should I choose when importing the footage? I'm hoping to film in 24P.

Any tips would be helpful as I've only ever edited SD video.

Thanks,

Mike

HV20's 24P will work in any editor that supports native HDV. But you won't be able to extract the pulldown and cut in true 24p on Premiere Pro 1.5. I don't think Premiere Pro 2.0 supports that either; I don't think any editor other than Vegas does right now. I would certainly expect the next version of Premiere Pro to support it.

Canon records 24p/F in two different ways. The 24F on the XHA1/XLH1/XHG1 is recorded differently than the 24P from the HV20. The 24F is a special non-compliant mode that can only be played back in Canon camcorders, but it records and stores only 24 frames. The Canon HV20 records 24P as 24p-over-60i, using 2:3 pulldown. That would be intercompatible with Sony HDV camcorders, but doesn't (yet) allow for pulldown removal, so you'd have to edit your 24p on a 60i timeline.

Alright... thanks for that. Sounds like I should wait to upgrade until PPro comes out with something else.

So, with PPro 1.5 I can choose ...

HDV
1080i 25 FPS
1080i 29.97 FPS
720P 29.97 FPS

Which one would be best to choose?

Thanks again,

Mike

Also, what about this update from Adobe for Pro 2.0
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3408

Editing presets for Canon Progressive-scan HDV cameras

This update provides presets that enable Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 to edit progressive-scan HDV video recorded with the Canon XL-H1 camera. Supported frame modes: 24F, 25F, and 30F.

More information about the Canon XL-H1 can be found at the Canon XL-H1 microsite.

To edit interlaced video from Canon HDV cameras, you should use the Adobe HDV presets that are included with Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0.

Note: Export to tape is not supported for 24F content. If you choose export to tape, the action will fail.

As you said, it is recorded differently so it probably won't work.

Right, that won't do you any good. You'd use the 1080i/29.97 preset for HV20 footage, unless and until Adobe announces an update that supports pulldown removal from 1080/24p footage. The HV20 uses the same method of pulldown as the Sony V1U, so there are multiple cameras on the market doing it; hopefully that will inspire Adobe and the others to develop/include proper support.

Thanks, so much!
I really appreciate the help. Looks like 1.5 will do, for now...

Cheers,

Yes with CineForm's Aspect HD you can capture directly via the HDMI output into a Black Magic Intensity card and you can scale and extract the pulldown as well. Then you'll have files ready to use in Premiere 1.5.1 or 2.0.

Hello!

I'm using PP 2.0 & received the HV20 today. I can't even capture! I get this error:
1175136020.gif

I'm able to capture standard video w/ Premiere & the HV20, but once I try & do HD footage I get the above error!

I try using the Adobe HD-SDI setting, using both of the HD settings: 1080i & 1080p setting in Premiere & have no luck! Any help would be much appreciated!

THANX!
