HOLY CRAP! I just got HD-DVD

I know there has been talk of HD and how awesome it is on this site. Well, I just bought an HD-DVD player and...WOW! It's AMAAAAAAZING! I popped in Miami Vice (HD version) just to get a taste before I had to leave (for an important appointment) and I couldn't leave. I just stared in awe for literally... 20 minutes. Like I couldn't look away. If you in any way enjoy movies, drop what you're doing, and go buy one of these players (I bought this over Blu-Ray b/c it was cheaper and I just liked what I saw in my research. I'm sure Blu-Ray looks just as good. But I'm betting that the general public understands "HD-DVD" better than "Blu-Ray" and will end up winning the media war).

Oh, and don't forget to get an HDMI cable. They take care of video and audio and are an extra $50-100.

yes, it is the greatest isnt it, but Blu Ray is a bit better, and selling 5 to 1 in comparison to HD DVD.

that 5 to 1 figure is for hardware, the disc players, and includes sales of the PS3. as of three weeks ago, disc sales are more evenly matched with bluray selling 100 discs for every 98.71 HD-DVDs sold.

Sucker. Holding out for players that read both formats, and burn both formats. Forget side-choosing.

I have a feeling the disparity will go down with the HD-DVD price drop. At least I'm hoping. No one wants to be on a sinking ship.

This is so cool. I bought four HD movies (Miami Vice, Babel, Batman, and King Kong). I do not anticipate sleeping tonight.

Blu Ray has more industry support, so I think that it will win out over hd dvd, much like vhs beat out betamax

POW, the man has spoken.

However, BluRAY will not liscence itself to the Adult industry. HDDVD is. HDDVD will win. ITs a 20 billion dollar a year business that the Bluray camp jus turned its back on. Silly rabbit....

it's not BluRay that won't license to the porn industry, it's that the porn industry couldn't find a BluRay Disc replicator company willing to make their discs for them. but i'm hearing that Vivid has successfully resolved that problem and is planning releases on both formats.

i rea a whole article about how Sony wont allow porn o ntehri discs, same with Betamax, hence its demise.....

Go to any store here in Tokyo and the number of Blu Ray devices and media on shelves outnumbers HD DVD 3-1. That doesnt mean a lot, but is an indication. Japan usually has the earliest uptake.

thats due to a number of factors but most importantly shows the trend of BD being the successor over HD DVD when its all said and done.

I'm tracking both formats, and bought an HD-DVD recently on a whim because it was a $150 upgrade over the uprezzing DVD player I was going to buy anyway.

Blu-ray discs have been outselling HD-DVD of late, I'm curious to see if that persists after the rush of PS3 sales for Christmas. HD-DVD players are cheaper, which the uneducated will buy on price alone.

The gamers are loving that PS3 includes Blu-ray by default, but the price matches that of Xbox 360 plus the HD-DVD unit.

The studios have been all over the map, and of late (last I heard, somebody correct me if I'm wrong) 7 of 8 studios were supporting Blu-ray, 3 of 8 were supporting HD-DVD. How many both? I don't have stats handy for which are supporting both.

Quality CAN be the same with either format since they use the same video codecs, but in the field the authoring quality has varied a bit, and overall last I heard Blu-ray had more better looking titles than HD-DVD.

So I've got an HD-DVD player, but only on a partial whim. Plus I can burn DVD-R discs with HD-DVD content on them and play them on my player and computer, which I can't at this time do with Blu-ray.

Standalone Blu-ray players are still substantially more expensive than standalone HD-DVD players, and the combo players are more expensive than buying one of each, so THAT'S no solution in the near term.

All that said, King Kong and Batman Begins look GREAT on HD...but I wish I could watch Casino Royale on HD.

I'll eventually probably buy a Blu-ray player to go with the HD-DVD player, but I DON'T recommend everybody do that - I'm a nut, and I know it.

I say wait it out to see which format wins out...and if it is the more expensive Blu-ray, that is a mixed blessing...I like the greater capacity of Blu-ray for burning data, but the price point is still 50% higher than HD-DVD.

Yeah, I was a little upset that when I researched what movies were available for HD DVD, that there were only about 150 titles. But at the two Best Buys I went to, the offerings for each format were equal.

What I found is that (with my limited number of titles) if the movie was shot digitally, it looks better. Miami Vice looks AMAZING, especially the outdoor shots. Babel looks great but it has that slight softness that comes with film. Any other films I should check out on HD DVD (I have King Kong, Batman, Babel, Miami Vice). I was thinking Superman Returns, but man was that movie boring.
