Can I edit on same drive that stores P2 footage?

I have a dedicated Lacie onto which I copy my 8GB card in the field.
Currently I have 6 partitions. The Final Cut Pro system to which I
have access requires that we bring in our own drive(s). Now I know that
if I connect this Lacie, I can open Final Cut Pro and edit right away.

However, when I go to store the Final Cut Pro project, can I save it
to this same Lacie (250GB) or should that drive stay exclusively
a repository for the P2 cards?

In that case, should i bring in another Lacie and would I daisy-chain
that to the first? The computer is a G4.

Thanks.

Save everything to the same drive, that's fine, and is the prefered method. Project file, media files, everything on the same drive is preferable. It just can't be your system drive.

Question, why is your drive devided up into so many partitions?

According to the manual, copying a P2 card to a hard drive will a.require
wiping everything out on that drive and b. 15 partitions will be created.

Since I've copied my 8GB card six times to the hard drive, I figured that's
6 partitions.

The drive is a Lacie 250GB but unfortunately due to the 15 partition
structure (x 8GB) I can use only 120 GB to store I'm told. The P2 card
formats the drive that way. I don't know why it won't create another
15 partitions but I'm told it's one (15 partition chunk) per drive.

I was at a trade show last week and an Apple rep. told me that the 15
partitions is something that was required by the needs of Windows XP
(and even though I'm on a Mac the P2 card still works that way because
copying the card is ...pre-Mac...I guess?)

Ben, you have a lot of experience. You're sure that I can store my
Final Cut Pro project file back onto this drive that has been formatted
so that P2 cards can be copied to it?

Just asking out of trepidation. THANKS.

Whoa! Stop! Back up! Are you copying to this hard drive directly from the HVX, no computer involved? Is this an "on the go" drive? Or are you copying from the P2 cards to your Macintosh and it's hard drive?

Hi, Ben. Yes, I copy the P2 card directly to the Lacie in the field.
Well, almost directly. The manual says that you can do this using
Firewire from the camera to the hard drive (and the hard drive has
to have its own power which it does.) However, when I first went to
do this, it wouldn't work. I kept getting "1394 init error". I kept at it,
following the manual and varying what I connected first.

Finally, I took a six port Elkin hub and put that in between the camera
and Lacie (camera to hub, Lacie to hub) and it works. I don't know why
but it does. I hooked the drive up to a Final Cut Pro system and each of
the partitions showed up as an individual drive. I brought in some P2
footage from one of them and it edited okay (didn't save anything though,
just did a couple of test edits in the time that I had.)

As I'm writing this, I'm thinking that maybe I ought to save my Final Cut
Pro project to another drive that I'll also have to bring in to the edit room.

What do you think? Thanks.

Ah HA! I get it now! No, the dirve you use to off load footage, when you connect it directly to the HVX with no computer, no, you should NEVER edit off that drive. That's just a "collection" drive so to speak. I think the it's supposed to be a FAT32 formated drive, also. Which is why you have to use a hub. And then it will partition itself.

No, in that mode of copying, you can not use that drive to edit with. That footage should be copied to an "editing drive" where all your "working" files will be. The drive you off load to in the field is just a big storage drive.

I've very minimal actual experience with this. So I hope y'all I know do this a lot will chime in and let us know how you handle this "On The Go" situation.

You may have answered this and I don't see it because computers aren't my
strong point, but why does the HVX-200 manual say that you can copy P2
cards directly from camera to hard drive and I need to use the hub? The
manual does say that the first step is to format the hard drive which I think
that I did but honestly don't remember now. However, it was a brand new
250 GB Lacie never used before.

It has to specifically be an "On The Go" drive, or "OTG" drive. I'm sure someone else can explain why better than I can, since this is not my normal work flow.

At least I understand the big picture: Leave my field drive alone
and edit to another. Thanks!
