Exporting Tiff Files in FCP

Hey Guys,

I shot a commercial on the HVX in 1080hd and am having some problems exporting a TIFF sequence in FCP 5.1.4 for some graphics work someone is doing for me. When I look at the sequence after export the images are squeezed into a 720 or 4:3 image (not sure, but it's not the size I need). Thge graphics guy says they're no good as well and don't stretch out well at all in MAYA.

I'm exporting from the sequence timeline and the settings are all fine. It doesn't give me the option he change the aspect ratio on export, by why should I have to if I'm using current settings.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

Maybe something weird because of the DVCPro codec? You could try dropping the parts for export onto a timeline w/ a more generic codec and then set all the settings to your needs. Then try that export. You shouldn't have to render, it'll do that on export I would imagine. Anyway, just a thought. Good luck.

cheers.

No, it's FCP, FCP has a problem exporting DVCPRO-HD stills. It does, in fact, cut them to 4:3. The work around, until Apple fixes this bug, is to open that clip in the Viewer from the Browser, set in and out points around the section where your desiered still is, export as a QT movie, open in QT Player, Export as a Still. QT Player keeps the proper aspect ratio, FCP doesn't, let's hope there's a bug fix for this soon.

hmmm, I need to export every frame though in about 5 different sequences...That's alot of time exporting each frame in quicktime...There must be some other way or program?? And if I downgrade to 4:3, won't the footage look terrible when I bring it back into FCP after the graphics is on?

Cheers,
J

You can do the image sequence export in QT Player, you don't have to do it one save at a time. In QT Player, Export, Movie To Image Sequence, it will make a folder containing all the individual frames of that QT file. And it won't make it 4:3.

Works great so far BenB, thx!...BUT, Another question here -

If the footage was shot in 1080i 24 fps on the HVX200 will I be exporting at 24 fps in the quicktime image seq export. Isn't HVX200 Footage at 1080i interlaced so wouldn't there be more frames. Sorry, maybe a very stupid question, I'm more of a shooter than an editor, all these new formts can be puzzelling.

Thanks guys

When you export you're exporting frames. Interlacing is about breaking frames into fields. So you won't have more files. Only catch is that if there is movement happening in the frame you might see the fields in that exported image then. If its just a few stills then you can just use photoshop's de-interlace filter on the problem areas. If its a lot of stills then you could use the de-interlace filter, but you're tossing half your resolution at that point. So depends on what quality sacrifice you're willing to make or how much time the graphics guy is willing to spend.

cheers.

OK, so the animator now wants it in Targas format. I don't have the option in Quicktime for this, and FCP is just giving me an error message.

So I should deinterlace first? Sorry, what do you mean by save the quality hit, best depth?

Also, when I did export from quickime it seems to render the video whatever size your frame is in the viewer.

I'm probably doing everything wrong, but this help is getting me through...and hopefully others who read this soon ;)

cheers
